The Last Guy (TLG) is a game I’ve heard mention of for a few weeks now, but only recently have I come to understand just what it is. And what it is, is FUN. TLG is a PSN game, recently priced at $9.99 and will be available to suck up more of your precious HDD space on 8/28.
Basically, you play a guy running around a city trying to rescue people from zombies and monsters that are also roaming around. The view is unique, a satellite/top down view. Picture a highly detailed, realistic Sim-City or looking down at Google Earth and you will be on the right track. People are hiding in buildings and as you run up to the building, they join you in a kind of refugee conga line. The more people you rescue, the longer the line gets and the more stamina you earn. Stamina allows you to sprint, handy when a spider zombie is bearing down on you.
Your objective is to lead your line of people into designated Rescue Zones. At the end of the time limit, they will be rescued and you will earn points for the more people you save and for any VIPs that you save. VIPs are special people that add a lot of points to your score, but are usually more heavily guarded than Dick Cheney.
The game was actually a lot of fun to play. Kind of reminds me of a modern version of Pac-Man. Some of the monsters are gigantic, kind of like the Cloverfield Monster. One thing I want to point out is the music. I loved it. It was only one tune, but it was bouncy and addictive. I hope every song is as good on every level. However, it is one of those games that makes me wonder if I will enjoy playing it for a long time. After trying the demo, I really liked it, but I also see how I could get tired of this rather quickly. Unless there is some great variety, each level might end up feeling the same. Also, the $9.99 price is kind of high for a downloadable game. Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty is only five bucks more! If it was $4.99, it would be a no-brainer, but now I have to pause and wonder if it’s worth it.
CONCLUSION: Cautiously Optimistic.
I still need to go try this out on PSN.
