XBox 360: A Sordid History of a Broken Console

I’m not sure how many of you guys that own 360s have had the RRoD (Red Ring of Death for those of you who, like ostriches, have buried your heads in the sand and missed the acronym), but I have experienced 2 myself. Yeah. Dos.

Being on my 3rd Microsoft XBox 360 has left kind of a sour taste in my mouth, and I wouldn’t tolerate it save that it’s probably the most played console I’ve had since the original Playstation. It’s kind of weird because out of all the consoles I’ve ever owned, only 3 have broken. All were Microsoft products.

Over at VentureBeat, Dean Takahashi has put together a lengthy recourse that chronicles the sad, woeful tale of Microsoft’s oft-broken next generation machine. He talks about the RRoD, and the manufacturing problems, including when an engineer said they had to stop production early-on because of potential errors.

An interesting read, but not a bright spot for MS. How about you dudes? Have any of you been the victim of the dreaded RRoD?

  1. I finally had mine go. I swear I know why it did it. It happened right after I turned off my console while in an online game (shouldn’t be a problem though

They say that the problem is now extending to elites. Microsoft is just too big a corporation. They can pay to replace them all instead of shifting things, paying more money and getting things fixed. Its cheaper Im sure to just repair them (or SAY you repaired them) And its not just XBOXs

    There’s a reason people say “Its Microsoft…”

  2. Lol, I hardly ever play mine. I mostly play PC games, I doubt I’ll even touch my 360 until I get Fallout 3 which won’t be for another month so that’s a while. Only reason I’m not getting Fallout 3 for PC is because I’m not sure if it will run on it, and I’d rather not take a chance.

Well, to their credit, while it is a crappy thing to have these things going out, I haven’t had to pay a dime to fix it, and I know that I’m covered for 3 years is actually pretty comforting. Beyond that, my console was replaced within 2 weeks each time.

Oh, yeah, their warranty policy is great, however, just the mere thought of that turns me off.

I could not pay that much money for something to have it fail like that.

  5. Yah, mine Red Ringed on me RIGHT At THE END OF HALO 3! I had just gone airborne (those who play should know) and all of a sudden…BLAM! Red Ring! Although those dudes who fixed the ‘Box did get it back fast.
