I have a weird love/hate thing with “best of” gaming lists. They’re addictive as anything to read, but a lot of times you want to just slap the writers of them in the face for the way they have ranked the games. While a lot of that is expected and just typical subjectivity, sometimes dudes just get it wrong.
Take GamePro, for instance. While I’m sure they mean well with their new “Best of XBox 360” list, they are sadly, horribly, woefully misguided in the way they’ve placed the appropriate titles. There should be terrible punishments for people that are this far off.
I’m fine with things being a little hokey due to everyone having different values, styles of play, whatever. But leaving games off of your “top 32” like Castle Crashers and Forza 2 is just a crime. On top of that, Bioshock comes in at number 10 behind Assassin’s Creed, Braid and Halo 3 (which was number 1, by the way- ugh). Heck, they had Bomberman Live on there, and that game sucked.
A friend suggested that I go look up what Metacritic had to say on the matter in terms of a conglomeration of the reviews of all XBox 360 games, and their list was quite different. But since many reviewers are silly and swayed all too often by hype, Nick and I arranged our own top 10 list:
1. Bioshock
2. Gears of War
3. Call of Duty 4
4. Orange Box
5. Halo 3
6. Grand Theft Auto IV
7. Oblivion
8. Mass Effect
9. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2
10. Crackdown / Castle Crashers (couldn’t decide!)
Do you guys get this incensed when you see a really bad “Best of” list? Heck, some of you might even scoff at the one that I put down, seeing as how I look at Crackdown with rose-tinted glasses. Anywho, check out their list and see if I’m overreacting or if I’m justified in my righteous indignation.

Assassin’s Creed? God, that game was so average. Do something…then do it again and again and again.
No thanks.
Yeah, I was shocked that it was in the top 10 at all, let alone above games like Oblivion and Bioshock.
Oblivion was so much fun. I can’t get enough of that game.
All aboard the hype train.
Man, I can’t play Bioshock… Got to change shorts all the time…
Amazingly bad list from GamePro
top 10 order made me die all the way on the inside
This is gonna sound insane but I’d much rather play Assassins Creed then Oblivion. And I have yet to play Geometry Wars and Castle Crashers. Within two months that list is probably gonna have to add Fable 2 and Gears 2. But how about a list with 360 exclusives?
Interesting question there at the bottom. It’s getting to the point where there are so few blockbuster exclusives these days, you wonder why there’s more than one console at all.
I think the 360 would still edge out the PS3 in that regard, but just barely. In a year’s time, I think that probably won’t be true.
Well just try and make a list of 360 Exclusives. You get what? Halo and Gears. Then it’s a drop in popular games.
You could add Fable to the list, but after that it gets lonely.
PS3 has Ratchet, Uncharted, Resistance, Little Big Planet and something else I can’t remember right now.
Yet it seems Microsoft is still winning? Is it the price point of the PS3 that drives everyone away? You could also add Mass Effect to 360 exclusive. But it’s on PC also, still owned by Microsoft. Maybe everyone just likes Master Chief, and Marcus enough to miss out on some good Sony titles? I don’t know. Doesn’t make much sense to me.
It’s the year head start and the price.
Plus, it took Sony a while to get some good games, but its starting to put up a fight now.
I think Sony will catch up to MS before too much longer.
Hey now, at least get the list of exclusives right.
Off the top of my head I can already name Blue Dragon, Crackdown, Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Ghost Recon, Forza, Virtua Fighter, Resident Evil 5, Project Gotham Racing, Dead or Alive, Viva Pinata, Saints Row… And that’s not even including XBLA titles.
Ghost Recon, Virtua Fighter, Resident Evil 5, and Saints Row 2 will not be exclusives. But ya. I forget about XBLA. That is a very good point.
Oh wait, you’re right about that. For some reason I thought Saints Row 2 was exclusive as well. Doh!
Also, Viva Pinata and Blue Dragon will appear on the DS in various forms.
So, yeah fewer than ever,lol.
Pfft- you are honestly going to call a DS port the same as a next gen console game? Now you’re just reaching.
I’m just pointing out that I like the cat.
Forza 2 rules.
No, I am not. But we are talking exclusive and the second it appears on anything else, makes it non exclusive. Come on, fellow English major, agree with me on the meaning of the word exclusive, lol.
If God of War appears on the DS, I would not call it exclusive, lol.
I think the DS Blue Dragon is a tactics like game. Or maybe a C&C type. Who knows? The wiki is vague
Only if it’s the same game would I call it that. For instance, the FF 12 Revenant Wings or whatever it was for the DS doesn’t make FF12 NOT exclusive, because it’s not the same game.
It’s a spin off, yeah, but Final Fantasy already is not an exclusive property.
Yeah, but that doesn’t make FF XII a non-exclusive title.
By that logic, when Resistance: Retribution comes out for the PSP, Resistance 1 and 2 are no longer exclusives? And MGS Portable Ops is for the PSP, so that isn’t exclusive either? Oh, and also the Clank PSP game…
Leaving the PS3 with how many exclusives?
Ya but there still exclusive to Sony.
No, FFXII itself, as a game is exclusive. I think we are talking about different things.
I am talking about IPs you are talking about games, so I think we got our wires crossed.
For your other point, when Resistance: Retribution went to the PSP, its still a SONY exclusive. If Blue Dragon went to a MS handheld system, it would be exclusive to MS.
For instance, if I want to play Halo, I need a MS system and if I want to play Mario, I need a Nintendo system.
Metal Gear is not exclusive as a franchise anyway, since MGS2 and 3 were on the Xbox and Snake appears on the Wii in Super Smash Bros.
Just like Ninja Gaiden Sigma was on the PS3 and Dragon Sword was on the DS. NG2 was a 360 exclusive, but the series as a whole is not exclusive to MS.
To sum up this post: “Waaaah, they didn’t arrange their top titles like we did!”
I mean, come on, it’s called an opinion, people.

yeah, but when they are saying these are the BEST, you have to do a little better than that.
It might just be me, but does anyone else think that perhaps sites like IGN, are paid under the table for some of their reviews?

It’s not just you, that issue has come up before in the past, but what makes you think IGN is guilty of such a thing?
yeah, but when they are saying these are the BEST, you have to do a little better than that.
It’s still an opinion, through and through, and if you guys don’t like it, that’s just tough.

Yeah, and we’re allowed to have a reaction to it. And if you don’t like it, then, uh, “tough”. 😉
Goes both ways. Just expressing my opinion, the way they did theirs.
Yeah, well we aren’t saying anything other than, “We disagree, here’s our list, what do you guys think?”
Don’t see how that’s so bad.
Can we get a best of list for all the new systems? lol
