TIME’s Top 10 Games of 2008

We all know what the end of the year means… Sure, there’s that celebration where we get presents and eat lots of food and it gets colder (at least here in the States), but there’s also that other special factor: “best of (insert year here)” lists! It’s when everybody starts listing off what was cool about the year before, and it’s addicting as hell to read them.

Heck, even TIME has put together a best video games of 2008 list, and the results are about par for the course, I’d say.

Breakdown is after the jump:

1. Grand Theft Auto IV
2. Braid
3. LittleBigPlanet
4. Rock Band 2
5. Gears of War 2
6. Dead Space
7. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
8. Hunted Forever
9. Fieldrunners
10. Spore

While it’s interesting that none of those are Wii games (oops), and that Fallout 3 is missing, overall it’s not too bad, especially for a magazine that isn’t known for gaming opinion. Though I’ve never played Fieldrunners (it’s a Newgrounds flash game).

What do you guys think? Any others that are missing or should be replaced?

  1. I don’t like it but that’s just me. Hate me if you must but GTA? Not a fan at all. You go to a mission shoot guy A drive to B collect money at C. But it’s someone opinion so I just ignore it if it’s as badly composed as that. It gets colder here in Ireland too. Still as wet as it is all year round though.

  3. Good point about GTA. I wasn’t a huge fan of GTA, but I didn’t take issue with the list because I know that every list is going to stick GTA on there at number 1, unfortunately. The missions were so repetitive!

  6. Huh, that’s a weird typo. They misspelled “Fallout 3” as “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.”

    Their copy editor should be fired.

    ya know, I wont say it was terrible. But to be honest, I beat light side and never touched it again…so yea….

    I am just now hearing about this Braid…

  9. No, it was more than a disappointment. It was nearly unplayable.

    Terrible combat, glitchy and kinda boring to boot. And I am the biggest Star Wars fan ever.

    Masters of Teras Kasi was better.

  10. Uh, I’m going to be honest. I’ve never heard of Fieldrunners or Hunted Forever before. I’m going to take a wild guess and assume that they are indie games.
    Anyway, this list is all wrong. They forgot Fallout 3, which should take GTA4’s place on the list. GTA4 should be, like, 4th or something. It was pretty cool, but it wasn’t the best game evarrr.
    And they forgot Call of Duty: World at War. It should have been at least 8th or perhaps 9th if you must.

    And here I was, thinking that Time would nail it better than Gamepro.

  12. I’m surprised that Fallout 3 wasn’t on there, GTA4 deserves to be on the list, but not #1, and a flash game? Come on… I’m less surprised that MGS4 isn’t on there. Despite its great reviews, it just isn’t a game. Maybe it’ll make their top 10 movies of the year 😛

    The RYNO’s are the best reason to play them. And, like every other weapon in it! Oh there’s one! Why is Quest for Booty missing from the list?

  15. My opinion, the rankings on TIME aren’t that good… A lot of better games could hav been replaced in that list.

    btw, Captain Qwark FTW! again.

  16. GTA IY shouldnt be in the top 5 it was fun for awhile but the missions were way to repititive.

    the put the force unleashed and an iphone app but not fallout3 or even castle crashers

  19. The best way to play GTA4 is to complete the game and get all the goodies, then never save again. Keep playing from there with cheats!
    GTA without cheats sucks

    Dude the glitchyness…I can agree. I just cant call it terrible because I beat it. But yea, biggest letdown so far

I’ll try to shed some light on one thing, i dont really agree with this list either, its missing Fallout 3 which is a must, I dont think GTA should be there either, but since nobody knows what Fieldrunners is, its a game for the iPhone, its like tower defense, and while its not the most complicated of games, it does absorb a lot of time for me, so i dont think its that misplaced.
