GamerSushi Asks: Best Gaming Gift?

sm64It’s finally the week of Christmas, and I’m really not sure how that happened. Last I checked, it was like November or something, but here we are, and I’ve now time traveled into the future. Seeing as how it’s that time of the year, I’m almost certain that by the end of the week I’m going to have added some games to my collection, as I’m sure is the case for many of you.

Which begs the question: what is the best game you’ve ever received for the holidays? Not one that you bought yourself, but one that was given to you during the holiday season.

For me, it was probably Mario 64, which came packaged with my Nintendo 64 the year that it came out. I remember ripping that thing open on Christmas Day, and being so saddened that we had to go to my grandma’s, because all I wanted to do was play more of it. Call of Duty 4 last year would be a close second. That is one of the games that shocks you with just how good it is.

What about you guys? What’s the best gaming gift you’ve ever received? Go!

Review: Prince of Persia

prince-of-persiaThe Sands of Time, the Warrior Within and the Two Thrones were some of favorite games on my PS2, especially the Sands of Time. The fantastic controls, the platforming, the sweaty palms as I guided the Prince past buzzsaw traps and rolling logs with spikes…all of it made for a fantastic gaming experience.

So with great excitement, I started on this latest adventure. First thing to note is that this is not a sequel or a prequel or anything like that. It is a reboot, no characters return except the Prince (who isn’t even a prince now) and Farah (who is now a donkey). This kind of thing never really bothers me, so I can’t blame the developers for wanting to start fresh on a new console.

MGS, Meet LBP

So the next update to LittleBigPlanet is going to make the darn sackboys even cuter and way more awesome. A new MGS4 pack is being added, complete with exclamation points, Meryl, and all kinds of other MGS content. There were will even be new story levels, and a paintball gun with which to shoot things. Guess we’ll see lots of sidescrolling shooter levels next. And that’s not a bad thing.

Shattered Save Slots: Final Fantasy VII

Resident Evil 5- Gameplay in the Refinery

Resident Evil 5 might have some of the best graphics we’ll see this gen. Seriously, the level of detail, the crisp motion blur, all of it comes together to form a stunning picture… of incredible zombie violence. And this is always a good thing. It’s nice to see some more gameplay footage, and not just trailers.

Anybody else excited about this?

The Great Big List of Future Video Game Movies

sfmovieSo we all know that video game movies tend to suck. We also know that somehow, people keep choosing to make the really crappy ones into movies, rather than games that are actually relevant anymore.

But did you know that there are 28 Video Game Movies in development right now? I had no idea that there were so many. And that some of the names on there are from games that just aren’t worth a damn.

Full list after the jump!

Video Game Heartbreakers, 2008 Edition

heartbreakEvery year has its ups and downs in the video game world. From console releases, to huge gaming flops, to bad decisions made by silly companies, there are always some great gaming memories to throw down at the end of each year. And as we all know, 2008 was no exception.

Ugo has just released a list of The Worst Heartbreaks in Videogames 2008, which chronicles the 20 biggest disappointments from the gaming realm for this good year. Some of the notables include DRMs and piracy, the gory fatalities that were cut from MK vs DCU and Nintendo’s lack of releases this holiday season. The number 1 though, might be a shocker. Fanboy sticks ready!

What about you guys? Agree with the list? What were some of your video game heartbreakers this year? I’d have to agree with the article that the combo of the fall deluge of games and the undersell of new IP combined to form my biggest disappointment this year. Seriously, if any other industry released all of its content at once, it would be suicide. Not to mention that in the gaming biz, the products are $60 each.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope Trailer

The new Star Ocean: The Last Hope trailer is full of that oh so special JRPG flavor. And I heart it very much for that.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again- they just don’t make JRPGs like they used to, but Star Ocean for the XBox 360 looks to be all kinds of epic, with some sweet graphics, and ridiculously fun looking battles. Plus, there are spaceships. Sign me up!

Today’s WTF: Second Life Movie?

secondlifeAre you ready for the megaton WTF bomb for the day? Possibly even the week? I’m going to have to do it quickly though. It’s kind of like ripping off a band-aid, where it’s best to just do it and get it over with. Ok, well here goes nothing: Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) has snagged the rights to a Second Life movie.

Yeah. You read that correctly. The story specifically has to do with a married dude who’s got a wife inside of the game as well. Dun dun dun!

So yeah, this guy is also making the Bioshock movie. And now, Second Life. Talk about a WTF inducing story. Anybody else NOT going to go see this one?

Halo 3 Still Truckin’ on XBL

halo3xblSeriously? I mean, I get it, the Halo franchise is big and all. I understand that people like it, love it even. I fathom the power with which the game can hold you, transfixed upon its HUD. But what I don’t follow is how, with all these great games out, Halo 3 still tops the charts for XBox Live. Here is the list for the past week:

1. Halo 3
2. CoD: World at War
3. Call of Duty 4
4. Gears of War 2
5. GTA IV
6. Left 4 Dead
7. Madden NFL 09
8. Fallout 3
9. FIFA 09
10. Fable II

If you own numbers 2-4, and are generally playing Halo 3 more than those, you may have a mental deficiency. Just saying, is all. What games have you guys been playing online the most these days?

Dead Space, Mirror’s Edge Sales Lackluster

eachart

Looks like Gamecop was right: publishers need to start spreading the Triple A titles throughout the year instead of bombarding gamers with a barrage of bad ass games during the holiday season.

But it appears they need to do so for their own sake and not for us poor, cash-strapped gamers. According to NPD, courtesy of Gamasutra, sales for Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge are very weak, compared with those of Gears of War 2, Fallout 3 and others. These are strong games, with very positive reviews and it appears they simply got lost in the shuffle of the hectic holidays.

What say you? Did anyone buy these games? Why or why not? And don’t you think it would behoove publishers to sprinkle these games out all year long instead of hoping they can get past the big boys of winter?

GamerSushi Asks: Would You Rather?

The holidays are approaching, which means that you guys will be playing games until your eyes bleed and your thumbs have blisters. It’s as good a time as any to have a brand new “Would You Rather?” feature at GamerSushi!

In “Would You Rather’, I simply ask a series of questions, and you follow up with your responses. Give as much or as little explanation as you want with your answers.

Unless your answers are lame. And if they are, be sure that your name will forever go down in the Lame Book of Laming Lameness. It is real, it is a best seller, and all of your friends read it.

Square Enix Hearts Them Some XBox 360

Uh, get out your fanboy flame bats once again. We all know that the console wars get a little heated at times, and quotes like this just add fuel to the fire. Apparently, the director of Last Remnant had some pretty interesting things to say about Microsoft’s console:

In fact, as we’ve only just finished work on Last Remnant I don’t even know what my next project is going to be at Square Enix. However, I’m very much hoping it’ll be for Xbox 360 as it’s been a lot easier to work with than PlayStation 3.

O noz! This isn’t the first time a developer has talked about this. In fact, Valve’s Gabe Newell said something about it some years ago. However, one always has to take these things with a grain of salt, especially considering Last Remnant supposedly sucked donkey balls.

Flame on!

Mirror’s Edge DLC Trailer is Trippy and Totally Sweet

Not sure how many of you guys have gotten around to playing Mirror’s Edge, but one of the things that I hear a lot is that despite it being a lot of fun, it’s got some flaws. Namely, having to fight with soldiers as well as other crazy ninja parkour dudes, which is just not everyone’s cup of tea.

There is a new trailer out for the Mirror’s Edge DLC, though, that looks to be all of the fun of the actual game, minus the combat. To me, when I see this, I’m like, dang, I’d pay for a game that was just THIS. What do you guys think?

The GamerSushi Grading Rubric

As you know, we’ve started to review games here on GamerSushi. Every now and then, we’re looking to post some of our thoughts about the games we’ve beaten, and then rating them based on our experiences. Hopefully, you’ll find this to be a well thought out feature that we do, and trust us, a lot of thought has gone into the process.

Here’s a handy chart that will let you know what we mean by our letter grades of games. Props to our bud Nick (the great bearded one) for coming up with this. I kind of heart it alot. Click on the thumbnail to view it.

LBP Sales are Not so Hot

Little Big Planet, we hardly knew ye. I always wondered if it was such a good idea for Sony to hitch its wagon onto Little Big Planet for the second half of this year. I mean, it was such a unique, different kind of game that it didn’t seem to me that all that many people would really be into it. They kept touting the thing as a console pusher, but I never saw it that way.

I guess other people agreed. Unfortunately, November NPD reports show that LBP has only sold around 400,000 copies since it came out in October. Compare that to Gears of War 2’s 3 million copies sold, and you’ll start to see what the big deal is. Considering that this game was THE game for PS3 for the holidays, those numbers are pretty dismal.

So what do you guys think? Just another sign of Sony dropping the ball this gen, or are they going to bounce back and be ok?

Drake’s Precarious Uncharted 2 Trailer

Seriously, if you own a PS3 and haven’t played Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, you really need to check it out. It’s one of the best games on the PS3, and is just a good old fashioned fun time. A new trailer appeared for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves last night at the VGA’s, along with some ridiculous high-res screenshots over at NeoGAF.

This trailer captures that cinematic flair that made the first game so fun. Can’t wait to play it.

Review: Gears of War 2

A few years ago, Epic introduced us to the wonderful world of Sera, and its monstrous inhabitants, both human and locust alike. Gears of War was a flagship title for the XBox 360, quickly becoming THE reason to own Microsoft’s next-gen system, and it made its mark in a rather commanding fashion.

For me, Gears of War was the first and biggest “next-gen” experience I’ve felt when playing a game, where I had a moment that made me say “Wow… this is the next gen”. The co-op play, the graphics, the score, everything about it came together to create an experience that was part Predator, part Aliens, part video game and all awesome.

So how does the sequel fare?

Wired’s 10 Most Disappointing Games Are Befuddling

Confused, befuddled, curious… any of these would describe my feelings after reading through a recent top 10 list. And know, it’s not another one of those infuriating top 10 best games of the year lists. Actually, it’s quite the opposite. Wired recently listed its 10 Most Disappointing Games of 2008 and I have to say, some of them are head scratchers. Take a look:

10. Age of Conan
9. Tom Clancy’s EndWar
8. Too Human
7. Stalker: Clear Sky
6. Mirror’s Edge
5. Dead Space
4. Prince of Persia
3. Mario Kart Wii
2. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
1. Spore

While I agree with the top few, having numbers 4-6 on the list at all are kind of puzzling, to say the least. What do you guys think?
