A Shadow of the Colossus Retrospective

sotcShadow of the Colossus is one of my favorite PS2 games, if not one of my favorite games, of all time. It is one of the prime examples of “games as art” that we have at this point, and might go down as the Citizen Kane of gaming, or something comparable. Everything from the design, to the story and the gameplay, all work in tandem to create a one of a kind experience.

However, not everyone has had the fortune of playing this fine piece of gaming history. Including the dudes over at Crispy Gamer, who have put up what is essentially a play-by-play of Shadow of the Colossus, as they go through it for the first time. It really is fascinating to read someone’s first time experiences of it as they beat each colossus, and it made me want to pick the game up and play it again after all these years.

Definitely worth the read. How many of you guys have played Shadow of the Colossus? How many would put it in your top 10 favorite games?

  1. that game completely changed the way i thought about games, definitely on my top 3.

sotc does a lot of amazing stuff, but i think the thing that made it for me was the details: physics based hair and cloth, the wildlife dotted around the empty wilderness, the way the tone of the wanderers voice changes as he nears colossus (a call for his horse agro becomes a cry of panic and desperation) and countless other things i haven’t listed.

oh, and chasing down a gigantic flying snake thing in the desert while standing on the back of your horse firing arrows is the single most epic thing ever.

  2. That is my no.1 piece of art and in my top 5 games. It was a little bit empty (in terms of life and things to do) but that I suppose kept the whole one man and his horse thing going. I loved every fight with each unique enemy. A few more would obviously be welcome as I’ve seen some of the scrapped ideas which were AMAZING. I never actually bought this as I rented it at the same time as Black. SotC got my undivided attention over three days and Black got about three hours of play. I was going to pick it up one time last year but it was pre-owned so I thought, “I’ll” look around for it. I have NEVER seen it since. Every time I enter any game store I search through the pre-owned section rather than this weeks newest release. I was so close 🙁

  3. Shadow of the Colossus was and still is beautiful, epic, and fun. What’s funny is that the developers were like, “Ugh, dungeons and regular monsters are such a drag… Let’s just make a game of 16 bosses!” Well, it worked. It’s as simple as it can get really in terms of gameplay, but that leaves room for huge environments, kickass Colossi, and powerful music.

Oh, sorry. Anyway, SotC gets… #4 on my Top Kajillion games list.

  4. Definitely in my top 5 games. It’s so epic, and there’s no side quests to distract you… It just feels like you’re alone, and there’s only one thing you need to do to get out, but it’s a really big thing. This game was just… Wow. Sublime. And there was quite a bit of replayability, too, what with the unlocks and the ‘Hard’ mode. There’s just so much to like about this game, it’s a pity they’ve not expanded or remade it.
