GamerSushi Asks: Public Humiliation?

frag-dollsIf you didn’t know, I’m at South By Southwest in Austin for the weekend. It’s a big media event with Music, Film and Internet stuff, and I’m currently at the Internet portion on business for my job. While I’ve been going to cool panels about new media and social networking, I also got to go to the “ScreenBurn Arcade”, which is devoted to video games.

Though ScreenBurn itself was kind of lame, I did get to play Halo 3 against one of the Frag Dolls, the professional girl gamers that play games and are also hot… and I got my ass kicked. I mean, it wasn’t too awful, she had 25 kills and I had 17 or so, but still, I was a little embarrassed. Luckily I didn’t talk trash beforehand.

It got me wondering about other public humiliations I’ve faced as a gamer. Probably the biggest one was playing DOA2 with my friends, talking trash like crazy… only to have my brother wander in, kick my ass and then walk away. All my friends gave me crap for weeks.

So, have you ever had a time where you got your tail whipped at a game in public? What was it? Go!

  1. Man Eddy, it sounds like your brother has handed it too you on a few different occasions.

My most embarrassing moment would probably come at a local Halo 3 tournament. It was 2v2 and I knew I wasn’t THAT good. I mean I have a positive K/D ratio but I don’t play it everyday like these kids we were playing did. Long story short, my buddy and I got beat 50-16 the first game and 50-43 the second. The second game obviously wasn’t quite as bad but just sitting there the first game and watching myself get killed over and over was just flat out humiliating.

    He’s got a point there!
Also, I never knew if the Fragdolls were good or not (publicity reasons was my guess.)
Anyhow, I don’t tend to trash talk for the reason you stated above. I like turning the tables on those who do. But the biggest humiliation in gaming I’ve faced is probably my sister beating me in Soul Calibur 2 10 matches straight. Her Seung-Mina served my Mitsurugi on a platter. I love Samurai, but that was a dishonourable defeat. Most her rounds were perfect. :'(

  3. I’ve never been publicly humiliated per-se, but it is embarrassing whenever you get your hat handed to you repeatedly by the same trash talker three times in a row.

  4. My most humiliating moment was when my sisters friend beat me in Halo SWAT 3 times in a row…

  5. I mostly play with other people in FPS games, which I’m pretty good at, so I don’t get completely humiliated too often. Now, if I were to somehow be entered in a Street Fighter tournament, that would be another story entirely. But really, why talk trash when you can let your game talk for you?

  6. *makes sure that no one is looking*

    *checks again*

    Okay.
One time i convinced my girlfriend to play Halo 3 splitscreen against me.
She understood nothing of it and i had to spend the first 10 minutes explaining how to look around and such. I didnt talk trash, sort of. We started first round and i instantly got her with the sniper, then i got some more kills and at one point she killed herself with a grenade which made me laugh out loud. That made her a little pissed so i said “its okay sweetie, its not about winning its about participating”
Then when we started second round she instantly got the rocket launcher and mauled my ass, again and again. I tried to sniper her: rocket to the face
I tried to assassinate her: rocket to the face. And i got all stoneface and concentrated really hard. she spotted that and tried to mimic my voice “its okay sweetie, its not about winning its about participating”

    Worst night ever

  7. Looks like you learned your lesson before the fight with the Frag Doll, Eddy. lol Actually I never gloat pre-game just for this reason.
I haven’t really gone to any big name events or tournaments, but on the LIVE, people for some reason call me out a lot. I suppose the L337 and Commando part makes me seem like an arrogant asshole…and I am. Anyway, my favorite time was on CoD4, last year I think. I joined a new lobby, and the game was Hardcore S&D on Strike, one of my favorite maps and favorite gametype. Some pre-pubescent accident was yelling and screaming about how awesome his killstreak was. Other guys were telling him to STFU because apparently nobody cared. Then out of nowhere, the kid calls me out, saying: “Hey, L-Three-Three-Seven Commando! (I hate when people lose their ability to read L337 as leet; I’m sorry that the Microsofts don’t let me start my gamertag with a number!) I bet you can’t do any better because you’re a fat bitch who has no friends and can’t do anything!”
I calmly reply, “Did you just learn the word ‘bitch’, and now you want to use it in a sentence?” That got a few hearty laughs and a scream from the kid. The game begins, and the first one dead is that kid. I killed him with a Suppressed G3 as he was rushing Bomb Site A. Once the game ended, I was MVP – 13/1 KD Ratio and two bomb defuses. The kid starts crying, and sit back in my rocking chair with nothing but a satisfied grin on my face and savor the moment.

That’s why I play Xbox LIVE.

  8. It was at FSU, the Student Life Building.

I was about to play Tekken 4 with this dude and before the match started, I said, “Give me a second to figure out what the buttons do cause I have never played this one”.

He unleashed a canned combo and beat me before I could even blink.

I turned to him, “Was that fun? Pressing a predetermined sequence of buttons to beat someone who has never played before?”

    Tekken sucks.

  9. I think my worst moment was back when SSBM was all over the place. Me and a friend of mine used to be some of the best players we knew, using all the tricks of the trade. (My personal character to use was mewtwo lol. Yes, weird choice. But use him right and..) so anyway. I was getting trash hurled at me & hurling some trash of my own back, & when we finally sat down to play, I got raped by my friends friend, who had just gotten the game. It was..kind of sad, actually. Then my friend beat me. Then his other friend. Then my friends friends little sister beat me & that was it.

Granted, I hadn’t played the game in a few months, so I told them to let me borrow it for a week & watch what happened. Well, after the week was over, after like 2 days of practice, I came back and whipped them all good with like 13% damage 1 VS 4. After that, we never played SSBM together again =)

  10. ugh worst time was before i had live i went to a mates house and we were playing some halo 2. i fancied myself allright because i school my step brothers all the time on split screen deathmatch. My mates little 9 year old brother who did nothing but play halo 2 all day challenged me and he beat me 2 out of 3 times proclaiming himself champion…

However my best moment was on R6V after i had live for about 3 months and i had developed some serious skills. i came across a trash talking all girl clan who were on a winning streak. they started talking shit and bagging me and i didnt say anything to make sure there would be no egg on my face in case i lost… 26 kills 5 deaths later when i finally decided to retrieve the intel they had a different tone… “never send a woman to a do mans job” then i left the lobby

  11. This isn’t really too bad, but I played at a local SSBB tournament expecting to go pretty far (as I consider myself to be a very good Yoshi player), and I end up losing in the first round to a guy who picked random character. Though I didn’t feel to bad because it got pretty close near the end and the same guy ended up winning the whole thing, after which he told me the fight against me was probably his most difficult.

Im lazy today so im going to quote all of what he said…

Yeah I just love those guys who talk trash before the game and act as if they were a god of the game. Then when you play them they do terrible. Thats why I dont talk trash.

    And is L337Commando your gamertag?

  13. “Their is no shame in defeat as long as the spirit remains unbroken”.
    Truer words were never spoken,
I suspect everyone on this site will be able to tell what game and character said the above quote.

  14. I haven’t been whipped in public…ever. Thats not bragging it just hasn’t happened. I mean I have gotten pretty far in tournaments, small ones at my old dorm place, and then been edged out by others, but nothing humiliating.

Im sure it may seem to suck to be beat by girl gamers, but to be honest, if they are MLG material….expect to die…A LOT.

On that note its MLG gaming style. I dont think its fun, its too competitive. Id rather have fun.
