GamerSushi Asks: Extend the Story?

ff7-acOver the weekend, I got sick as a dog. For real. Burritos and stomach viruses do not mix, and apparently I don’t go well with with those two, either. Anywho, my brother was in town visiting, and since our options were limited to anything I could do while plastered to a couch, we chose to partake in the glorious fight scenes of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

All complaints about the movie aside, the fight scenes are some of the coolest I’ve ever seen in any medium, but beyond that, the movie itself is total fanboy service in terms of the content it delivers. I mean, really, they revisit nearly every single major or minor character and even give you a glimpse at life after the events of the story. Hell, they have the main bad guy show up again.

This got me wondering- what other franchises or video games would you love to see get the Advent Children treatment that Final Fantasy VII got? If you could have a ridiculous fanboy-loving movie sequel to any game that allowed you to see what happened to your favorite characters, and even threw in pants-wettingly awesome action sequences, what would it be? Go!

  1. Mass Effect might be cool… if Keith David, Seth Green, and everyone came back to voice act. If anything it could have been released to boost Mass Effect 2 sales.

  2. The thing about Advent Children is that it was a bad story, that made no sense. And the anime inspired, over the top fight scenes, while awesome looking, made no sense. I mean, Cloud is a human, right? Why can he do all those things? I am not asking for realism, but at least show us that gravity works ALL the time.

So if there were a movie of a favorite game of mine, I would want it to be the opposite of Advent Children. You know…good!

But I would like to see Final Fantasy IV, VI, Chrono Trigger and Bioshock get something cool like that.

  3. I mean, all arguments about the actual movie aside- can you really complain about realism in a story that features talking cats, magical balls and a dude that’s trying to carry out the will of his dead alien mom?

Anywho, I meant the Advent Children treatment in the sense that a franchise gives fans a movie with their ultimate fanboy wet dreams.

Personally, I would love to see something like that for the Halo franchise, or like raider66 said, Mass Effect.

  4. This is going to sound really odd, but I’d say Republic Commando. That game was a breath of fresh air in the shooter genre, and it had a good story to boot. If only Lucas Arts had finished their work on the second one…

  5. wox, there are a few novels about Republic Commando. Supposed to be pretty good. Check them out, author is Karen Traviss.

Eddy, I understand what you meant, but the characters did incredible things that they did not really do in the game, which established the rules for this world. The movie throws them out the window. It has nothing to do with realism. The game established certain things and the movie ignored them.

Hey, you are right the action scenes are entertaining. I just didn’t care for it as a whole. My point was that if someone wants to do a fan service movie of one of my favorite games, they better make it better than Advent Children.

And the cat is toy that talks, not a real cat, lol.

Also, Castlevania would be a cool game to show some kick ass fight scenes in.

Upon re-reading your post, we are in complete agreement. The fight scenes are awesome to watch and the rest of the movie is kinda eh.

But my complaint was that the fight scenes did not seem to fit in with the FF7 universe we saw in the game.

But then, it is a movie and since they knew the plot wasn’t going to keep your ass in that seat, something had to! It succeeds as fan service, but not as an actual movie. But it wasn’t trying to be anything other than that, I think.

I second that, SW:RepCom was an AMAZING game IMO, I really wish I, one, owned it (I rented it and beat it in a few days, then returned it), and two, another one came out filling in some missions inbetween the game and possibly, although I think it may be poorly executed (No Pun intended) the Order 66 bit.

  7.
By talking cat, I was speaking of Red XIII, the talking cat. Not Cait Sith, the talking toy cat. Big dif!
SICK BURN, EDDY!

I totally forgot about Red XIII, aka Nanaki. Because I never use his lame ass! Good one, totally got me there.

  8. If you had asked me that a year ago, I’d have said MGS as there was just so much I wished to learn about, well, EVERYTHING! But all questions have been answered (bar what’s next for Kojima?) so now… Maybe Killzone. I just want to know more about the backstory of the Helghast. Think, it could be Saving Private Ryan – In space!

  9. Skuba,
If there is one game that does NOT need its story extended…its MGS,lol.

I would also like to see Resistance get something like this.

  10. i dont really play any games… with storys… i got tf2, css, and the like… all there really is is guild wars….

But what would be cool if CoD4 was made into a movie, not extending the story, but show the emotion when griggs and price died D’:

  11. Speaking of FFVII:AC, there is going to be a “Complete” a.k.a extended & remade for blu-ray version of it. With half an hour of extra scenes.

    Woot much?

No clue why the other post was deleted :/

  12. HALO!!!!!!!!111

Seriously, if somebody takes a lot of time to research the Halo universe and what makes Halo, Halo, then I think it’d be amazing.

  13. The Republic Commando books are actually really good, far better than most Star Wars books on the shelves. (I hate Troy Denning and his magical cop-out virus…Read Invincible and you’ll know what I mean.)

Anyways, I’d like to see the Fallout universe expanded. What’s happening beyond America’s borders? Imagine a contingent of Brotherhood of Steel soldiers sent into Canada to see if they can claim the Great White North’s remaining resources for themselves, only to find the remains of the pre-war US military, holding out against the invading hordes of Super Mutants riding war bears, and umm… Well, it can get more ridiculous, it is Fallout.

Resistance would be interesting as well. Alt history setting have always intrigued me, even if they do involve mutating space viruses. (The coolest part of Resistance one is how they used an actual meteor airburst [at least that’s what people think] to start the Chimeran invasion of Russia. It’s called the Tunguska Event, and it occurred in 1908.)

  14. Half-Life anyone?
honestly, Im surprised no one has said it yet.
Tell me Im not the only one curious about those multitude of unanswered questions that roll around constantly (Like the G-man, for instance).
Also, If done right (lest we get millions of pissed off Halo players), Halo. Good lore attatched to that game.

  15.
Mitch,
try the X-Wing series. Awesome stuff.
You clearly don’t know how deep my Star Wars addiction runs, lol. I’ve read and enjoyed the X-Wing books. I specifically liked Micheal Stackpole’s work over Aaron Allston’s, but that’s just personal preference.

  16. My problem with Stackpole is if you go back and look at the end of almost all his chapters, it almost always ends with a speech by a character, usually foretelling doom.

I love his books, but once I noticed that, it got really annoying.

Yeah, I have 112 Star Wars novels, starting with Heir to the Empire back in 1991 and I bought the newest one, Outcast, today!

  17. Yeah, I have noticed that. Sometimes he’ll do it in a really cheesy Gil Grissom/CSI kind of way where the character will make a pun relating to the dire situation. He’s also really into shoulder touching. (I, Jedi and his NJO books in particular.)

I’m waiting for Outcast to come out in paperback before I buy it. Invincible really soured me on Star Wars hardcovers.

That’s dedication! I’ve got 5 Halo novels. You win.

yes Disciple you rock! Same here, I can’t think of a game with so much unknown stuff. I think they should do a prequel to Half-life 2 where you fight in the 7 hour war or something, kinda like opposing force or blue shift.

Well, to be fair, I do have a head start.

  21. I want a good Halo movie. Or a good Metroid Prime movie. That’s all I ask for. And if they really tried, I bet you they could make both movies. And do great jobs at it. But they’d have to make them in parts, and not squash the stories together.
