Could this be the last generation of consoles? Apparently, that’s what analyst Michael Pachter thinks, and it’s his job to come up with this kind of stuff, I guess.
Here’s what Pachter-Man had to say:
I think we’ve seen the last generation of consoles… [Third party publishers] are not going to support a PS4 or Xbox 720. The content is not going to change in any meaningful ways because the publishers can’t afford it.
He also believes that Nintendo might upgrade the Wii at some point, but that both MS and Sony are going to stand pat with what they’ve got. Personally, I think we’ll probably see at least one more round of consoles, but he might not be too far off the mark. What do you guys think? Is this the last console generation?

As I sort of mentioned in the ‘Wow’ Factor thread I think it will take something techologicaly new to really drive home the next ‘generation’ of consoles and games.
Like you mentioned we probably will see another system with Beefier specs. Shit Sony will most likely find ways to make a PS3 the size of a Wii, perhaps…
I dunno, we need more than fancy graphics to really push the envelope
Yeah I mean, I kinda have to agree with the man there Eddy boy. I mean, I don’t think its the LAST. There may be at least one more update. Or two. But yeah, sooner or later, consoles are gonna be $1000 (touching on computer range) and games will be 120+ a pop. Personally *sociological mini-rant* I think the idea of money is an absolute waste of time and a quite idiotic illusion of power/worth and that if everyone just accepted greedy as something you don’t have to be, life would be so simple. But anyway, back to topic, it’s either more expensive games, or more companies doing the Wii-ness.I’d rather the more expensive games, even if that means I won’t be able to play them. Or to just stay with consoles as they are now. We’ve got all we need. If the PS3 can help solve the conundrum of what exactly a Black Hole is composed of or whatever, then we’ve really got enough.
I think so too. Like, how are they going to get better than this? Well, nintendo may… but if that OnLive system works, all of the consoles will be treated like dinosaur record players in the future.
Im sure that more will come in the future. Its not like people like this get it right all the time… or often.

I believe eventualy all our every-day technology will be merged (by “our” I mean the upcoming generation). We’ve already got internet access on our cellphones; soon it’ll just be a roll out keyboard and our entire machine.
Yesterday’s fiction is today’s reality.
Nintendo has never cared about 3rd party support, not since the n64 days. They will keep crapping out consoles.

You Make a good point. I havent noticed any support, not since N64 to be sure. sad really…
In short: No. They’ll be around for a good while.
Consoles will never die out because PCs have other uses than just games, and those other things usually have higher priority than games. A cheaper computer devoted to games is what a console is (which is why all this other internet and marketplace crap is honestly unnecessary), and because most people don’t feel like buying another PC and maxxing it out just for games, consoles are the way to go. While we might see just a single console out, consoles will not die.
Even if The ps3 is as far as console’s can go Its important to remember that after a while the console will stop selling and when they stop selling THE COMPANYIES STOP MAKING MONEY and there GREEDY so when GREEDY people STOP MAKING MONEY they will LIE,CHEAT AND STEAL to get more money and so if the new xbox is the exastly the same as the old one exept for a few possible added feature’s that could be added in a patch PEOPLE WILL STILL BUY IT AND PUBLISHER’S WILL MAKE GAME’S FOR IT! because if Microsoft say’s its good and they get some of there “game studios” to come over and make a Halo 4:No we lied it was not a trilogy now finish the damn fight, a major part of the xbox fanbase is going to move to the new xbox and thus the “non microsoft game studios” will follow the fanbase and start making it for the new xbox ( I pray its not called the xbox 720 ) and thats why we will forever have to spend monney on the next, best, greatest hope for gaming AKA the xbox 720

I agree – the next generation of consoles will probably idle on the power of the PS3, maybe with a little more power to make larger areas and more enemies. But they won’t use cell processors.
