As gamers, we’ve all gone through our own number of difficult ordeals. Whether it’s a boss, a particular area, or just a largely difficult stage, there are those games out there that just seem to give us fits because of the insane amount of skill needed to best them.
It’s funny, I was thinking about this just the other day, and lo and behold, GameDaily shows up with their own list of the hardest games of all time. There are quite a few on there that give me chills just by seeing their titles, and I’m sure you’d agree.

Pretty nice list, if I do say so myself. Definitely have to give them props for mentioning Battletoads. That game owned me so bad. So what about you guys? How many games on this list have you played, and do you agree with their assessment of the hardest game ever?

Portal? Really? That was one of those games I finally told myself “A game anyone can play and enjoy simple gamplay; and still enjoy a great story without too much confusion.”
hmm, one of the hardest games? I’ve never thought so.
If you want a real challenge, snag the indie game called “I wanna be the guy”. I dare you to try it…

Portal was just the right level of difficulty, so was the first Devil May Cry.
Ninja Gaiden??? Battletoads and Ghosts n Goblins were so much harder than that!
Yeah, I was really surprised to see Portal on the list at all. Never at any point did I find myself going holy crap this game is hard. I mean, Viewtiful Joe was nearly last on the list and that game was much harder than Portal.
Oh Viewtiful Joe was such a pain that I didn’t even enjoy myself, even when I was beating the crap out of people.
Portal was too easy to be on this list.
Battletoads was SO freakin’ hard.
Ghosts n Goblins was SO freakin’ hard as well.
Zelda 2 was awful and should only be on the “OMG this game was awful” list.
boom.
Zelda 2 was actually kind of fun, once you get the hang out it.
But it is the worst Zelda ever.
Viewtiful Joe was actually the only game where I chewed my controller out of frustration. That level when they made you fight every boss all over again with NO checkpoints was like some form of torture. I heard that US intelligence actually makes Al Qaeda captives play that section while listening to Metallica.
Yes! That was the part of the game where I just stopped playing. I just couldn’t deal with it.
I am currently trying to beat Contra III on the Virtual Console. The last boss is the most evil thing I have seen in years.
I used to think Ninja Gaiden was so hard. I had never beaten it before buying it on the Virtual Console. I always used to turn off the game when you died at the final boss and you started back at where you beat Malth. I never tried to get back to the boss finding that he had the health he lost from the previous fight you had with him.
Castlevania should have been on this list…

Castlevania used to be hard…but then Symphony of the Night went and introduced items and equipment. Now, in the more recent Castlevanias, if you’re stuck on a boss all you have to do is buy 9 hi-potions to win.
Yeah, but they list one Devil May Cry, they could have listed the first Castlevania over Portal.
Also, play the new one, Order of Ecclesia. The hard is back in Castlevania.
Wow I didnt even notice. Call of Duty 4 as number 11? I mean, maybe if you’re trying the game on Veteran ( I did, its pretty tough), but on any reasonable difficulty it was just another Call of Duty game… Wasn’t it?

Good point. They padded their list by adding God of War on God Mode and stuff like that. Hell, most games are a lot harder on the hardest difficulty! That should not count!
i thought portal was just the right dificulty, no easy, but not mind numbing, cod 4, really? and pretty much all mega man, not just 9 and the last levels of pretty much all the classic metroid games are ass holes.
What. The. Heck.
Where in the world is I Wanna Be the Guy????? That, my friends is be far the hardest game I have ever played and it’s not even on the list.
Portal??? Oh well Grid was pretty hard at first because it had a steep learning curve.
I don’t agree with COD4 and Portal, but I definately agree with MDK2. That game got pretty annoying. I’m actually really surprised people even know of the game because I am the only person I know who has played it.
For me, the hardest section in a game has to be in GTA:SA. That friggin mission where you have to kill people with the little remote controlled plane. God awful. Just awful. My only knock against Rockstar 😛
You forgot “Mine sweeper”
Man, I can’t get that game…
Has everyone forgotten about Kid Icarus? That game seems impossible…
I think that at least one final fantasy game should be on there. Unless you spend hours upon hours training, the game is pretty frickin hard to beat. I still have never been able to beat a final fantasy game without cheats, I’m just too impatient and just want to finish the game.

Good call, but as you get farther in the game, it gets easier cause Pit powers up. Very different from most games, but you are right, the start is very tough.
Just looked up I want to be the guy and wow. Now there is a game that truely hates you, playing it on impossible is literally impossible, like the game is made so people don’t beat it, but it has so many awsome old school references in it I love it haha
I think The House of the Dead 2 & 33 Return should be on list. Why? Because that last boss is impossible….
Beat Contra III last night! Whoop!
Ugh, COD5 on vet, hands down a total bastard. Also, Mega Man whatever is the new one. Got the demo. Died twice thought “fuck that.” Deleted it. Also, God of War wasn’t hard (the first one at least). I was put off for a long time after hearing about that bit in hell with the spinning blades and the climbing. There are 2 of them. I fell off the 1st one three times and got through the second one on my first go. The Hydra was harder.
Snes there is a game called nosferatu I’m curious if there even is an ending to it. That dungeon is so incredibly pissed off.
