Bioshock 2 Multiplayer Details

bioshock2Once again, a case of a game having multiplayer that doesn’t exactly need it in the first place. When Bioshock came out, there was a group of people that, as great as the game was, wanted multiplayer for some reason. I’m not sure what exactly they expected, but I for one love playing great single player games and thought that Bioshock was a perfect example of that golden age of gaming done right.

Well, it seems that the 2K Games dudes are going to deliver a multiplayer experience for the sequel, but luckily, it sounds like they’re going through a lot of work to do it, rather than just throwing everybody in Big Daddy suits. Apparently, each player is going to play a plasmid test subject during the Fall of Rapture. So, basically, the multiplayer helps add to the lore and mythos of the game series as a whole.

If Bioshock 2 has to have multiplayer, it’s probably better that they do something like this that builds more layers onto the story. Hopefully though, the mode doesn’t turn out to be stupid or take away from development of the single player. What do you guys think?

  1. Way I look at it is these guys did not put MP in there for the first gamee for a reason.

    Now that they feel more confident, they clearly think they will do it justice. They have earned the benefit of the doubt.

  2. I don’t care what they do with multiplayer – Bioshock doesn’t need it, and I probably won’t even end up playing it. And really, I would really rather they put all of their time and money into developing an excellent singleplayer game, rather than split it and create a good singleplayer game with subpar multiplayer.
    I think that multiplayer isn’t really a necessity at all – it’s a safety net. Developers these days are so afraid of making a game that doesn’t sell well, they tack on multiplayer left and right so that in the event that their single player campaigns flop, they get another shot at having a good game. But Bioshock? 2K did a great job with the first Bioshock, so I’ll go with it for now, but I’m having trouble seeing this be any good. On the bright side, though, they are going off the beaten path and attempting to add story to the multiplayer – I’ll give them that.

  3. Wondering how the plasmid selection would work? choose one or two at the beggining, or if you level up over time, or maybe you have to find them on the map for a limited bonus.

  4. I 2K knows that their fans want multiplayer, so they’ll treat it with a lot of time, effort, and awesomeness. It’d be cool to have plasmid deathmatches, but what I’d love to see is a system of upgrades for weapons and plasmids and maybe a unique feature or gamemode that makes BioShock 2’s multiplayer more than just a slapped-on afterthought.

  5. This is a much bigger argument than I, or any of us, could possibly sum into a single “comment”.

    Art *is* Art. It is difficult for an Artist to explain to a non-Arist why what they [the non-artists] appreciate has no artistical value, even if the item itself has value to said person[s].

    Its like someone trying to defend a hip-hop/rap song infront me, when I can break down the song into a time-line of how long it would take for ME to produce that very same song, (given the vocalist). Music is my thing, and so when someone wants to fight about music, I can hold my own grounds.

    In this same way, I feel that a large portion of gamers, are not infact “informed” gamers, in that they are not educated in the intricacies of gaming; they merely buy the most popular games, or those that recieve a 9.5 on gamespot.com. [yeah, go ahead, argue that the most “purchased” are the greatest games ever…] Sadly, the same truth applies to Music (i.e. Radio/iTunes or Movies… the true >artists< understand what I mean)

    And so, this uninformed majority purchases the same surface-based plastic-covered mediocre-driven bullshit that is mass produced and fed like fast food to the used and abused public over and over until the genre/series/band/ip/etc dies and the corporations find a way to shove whatever *new and hip* packaged crap infront of the paying public.

    It may be a curse to turn everything into philosophy, but I think if more people thought about all forms of ART in the same manner, there would be more informed decisions being made.

    — back to the idea of Multiplayer… The PC version of Bioshock didnt hold it, so who cares if the console versions did. I’m playing for the story – THE ART – not the F&%$ing racism/stupidity/ignorance that online play certainly brings out. – If I want that, I’ll look to the real world; the exact thing ART helps us to escape…

    I skimmed through this but, I’d have to say, for the most part (sans a few things) I agree. On topic though, I believe that, honestly, few people who played the first BioShock will play multiplayer for long in the 2nd. I believe that the company will do a fantastic job on the multiplayer aspect, but that, in the end, it may just be a waste of development on their part. At least, though, no one will have anything to complain about, if the game is as good as the first.
