Over the last month or so some new games have started to hit that I’ve been interested in, but I can’t seem to nail down whether or not I want to play them because of some mixed reviews. The main games in question are Red Faction: Guerrilla, Prototype and InFamous.
The main complaint about Red Faction is that it’s fun to destroy things, but the game is too red. This is a funny complaint considering the game takes place on, I dunno, Mars. The quintessential Red Planet. In addition, I’ve heard that Prototype is fun but nothing special, with similar digs leveled against InFamous as well.
So who’s played these games, and what do you think of them? Go!
Prototype is fun so far, with lots of upgradables and its a lot of fun. It keeps itself difficult, but fun at the same time, with pretty hard minigames that’ll keep you busy in between missions.
It took me the longest time to realize that Prototype and inFamous were different games lol. Anyway, I’m actually not that interested in any games that just came out, and I’m saving my money for the big hitters coming later this year, MW2 (omgasm), AC2, and Halo 3: ODST.
InFamous. Get it. Now. Seriously, it is probably the most awesome game to come out on the PS3 in a while.
As for Red Faction, I can’t really speak to it, but if the main complaint is – as you said – that the setting is red and brown, that’s a pretty minor flaw. If my X Box wasn’t currently on loan to my buddies, I would have picked it up by now.
RFG is sweet havn’t gotten too far into it but the whole geo-mod engine is awesome and its great to play.
Prototype on the PC comes complete with restricted graphics settings, sound issues, dodgy cut scenes and more sound issues.
But once you get around all that, it’s so totally awesome.
The parkour flows nicely, the combat is surprisingly easy to get used to and the move combos fairly easy to remember. The enemies mix between L4D 1 hit ko infected to super monsters that will pwn you if you aren’t careful.
It’s like a mix of Spider-Man (sandbox/fighting), Superman (flying), Hulk (Strengh), Hitman (Disguises), L4D (Infected/Infection) and any of the many military games out there.
Needless to say, it is definitely one of my favourite new titles of all time. A possible candidate for GoTY.
I bought Red Fraction on release and love. Story wise nothing thats going to blow your mind. Missions are fairly simple, Go here blow up this, save these people, etc. The real draw is blowing up things. While that may seem to exciting it is. And If I didn’t send my Xbox in for repairs I would be switching back in forth from RF and Prototype.
I am loving Prototype, as it’s extremely fun. Think of it as a gory cross between Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Crackdown. IGN put it best: “Infamous is more elegant and refined in design, with more of a focus on ranged combat, while Prototype is – truth be told – more frenetic and fun. Prototype is more of a spectacle and puts more power and choice in the hands of the player.”
I played inFamous for a good 3 hours at a friend’s house, and it is fun, until you realize that your electric powers are actually just flashy guns found in every first- and third-person shooter. You’ve basically got a pistol, shotgun, rocket launcher, and sniper rifle. And the karma system was completely bust. And the escort missions made me want to pull out my own hair. Still, overall it was fun, and it had nice graphics. Prototype is fun too, but it has odd spikes in its difficulty, and the story is nothing special. Neither one of them lived up to the hype, per se, but they’re both a good time. I’d recommend prototype, but honestly it seems to be personal choice.
Red Fraction is a thumbs up. Destroying everything is super fun and collecting guns is pretty fun too. I also enjoyed driving aimlessly around and off jumps and cliffs XD I can see some people arguing its very repetitive which it can be but its a thumbs up in my book.
I would pick up InFamous, to me it was a surprise hit. Prototype was pretty good, I really enjoyed it but unless you like the sandbox type superhero games like Spiderman 2, I think you could get your fill by renting.
I’m getting a 360 so i’m hoping to get RF:G as well. I’m a fan of the series and i still have #1 for PC installed!!!!
I’m looking forward to it hugely 🙂
the first Red Faction was revolutionary.. Destructable environments? nooo waaay dude! It was awesome; haven’t really cared/followed since.
I always got InFamous confused with Prototype, but Prototype is definetly the victor in that confusing double-feature. Gorgeous on PC if you’ve got the system for it. My machine is 2 years old and I can run it with everything maxed out (besides AA – at 4X currently).
Still exploring the rest of the Fallout 3 world. Great great game, worth every penny.
Soon to reinstall Bioshock and have at’er and finish it this time.
