There’s always been three certainties so far this generation in regards to online console services: Microsoft’s costs money, Sony’s is free and the Wii’s connectivity is balls. While the Sony Defense Force is always quick to point out how readily Microsoft is willing to try and nickle and dime its subscriber base, it looks like the PlayStation 3 might be setting up its own monetary-based service.
A recent survey lays out several different plans all with varying levels of privileges and content. There are some pretty decent perks included with the subscription options such as cross-game voice chat, loyalty rewards and access to the first hour of a full PlatyStation 3 game instead of a fifteen minute demo.
Judging by the survey it appears that PSN users are still going to get access to the basic offerings, and this is just an option for those who want a $69.99 garnish on their gaming experience. Take a look at the survey and tell us what you think. Would you pay for premium Sony content or stick with the basic package? Remember that this is just a feeler put out by Sony, so all these things are subject to change.

I think one of the cool features for this would have to be the ability to try out the first hour of new games. It really could promote more purchases, especially as people get to whet their appetite a bit more than just the 15 minutes that most demos offer. However, $69.99 seems like a steep price for just that handful of features. I’m curious to see more details about this in the future.
At $69.99 I’m wondering how much it will be in the UK in the end. I don’t honestly feel that any of that is worth more than an XBL subscription and the only one that I really want is cross-game chat. The rest I can do without.
I was reading on destructoid that that they may include unlimited ps1 classics for the most expensive subscriptions, which would definitely get my money.
Just another reason why I’m about to give up on this current gen, or at least on the next gen. Seriously, I don’t mind paying for online – okay, you want to make some money on the longevity of online games, that’s cool, I get that – but when Microsoft requires you to pay all these extra fees for stuff that’s free on the PC (like L4D’s DLC for example), no; you’re going to far. That’s not fair, son. Ugh, I wish I got L4D on the PC. Dammit, and I don’t want to waste money just to switch consoles.
As long as they don’t take away anything we already have, I am open to this
new things are kinda scary. The thing I’m worried about, is just when the ps3 is gaining popularity, could this set it back. As an owner of only a ps3 (no 360). I feel as if I rely on the success of the system, to have fun on it. If it does end up poorly, I’m going to pay, not only with money, but in enjoyment of online games that people may shy away from on the ps3. Also, if they take away the ability to share ps1 games onto the psp, I would be super pissed.

Nothing you have will be taken away from what I understand. New features may cost money.
I guess my biggest concern is that it adds to the system, and doesn’t take away. I just don’t want to be the guy that bought the hd dvd player (if you get the analogy)
I agree. From what I have read, it will only add.
Xbox ftw?
PC ftw?
Sorry glebe. I think they’re genious for throwing in those “small extra features” for the kids who are dumb enough/willing enough to pay for those extra things. There’s a geek market, clean up on that shit! People are willing to pay for it – cash in!
When I go to the movies and end up with popcorn, I don’t pay the extra 50 cents for the butter -because I don’t even like popcorn to begin with… On Tuesdays, we get popcorn and a drink for free with a ticket purchase… I STILL don’t get butter on that popcorn. It’s not because I’m cheap, it’s just because I don’t care.
