Crysis 2’s Writer Slams Modern Warfare 2

crysis 2First Battlefield Bad Company 2 takes a swing at Modern Warfare 2, and the newly-announced Crysis 2 is attempting to kick them while they’re down. EA Games recently revealed a trailer for the up-coming military sci-fi First-Person-Shooter, and now they’re trotting out the various people who are working on the game to let you all know how awesome their game is.

One such person is Richard Morgan, who you may or may now know of as the 2003 winner of the Philip K. Dick award for his novel Altered Carbon. Turns out he’s also a huge video game nut and he’s stoked to be penning the story for Crysis 2. As a video game junkie, he’s probably played a few of last year’s mega-titles, and in a recent interview with CVG, he’s let the world know that he doesn’t have a very high opinion of Modern Warfare 2:

“I thought Modern Warfare 2 was an immense disappointment,” he said.

“It was a massive stepdown from CoD4. What I thought when I played it was, ‘Jesus guys, what have you been doing? You’ve not ramped anything up. The story is worse and the game doesn’t really hang together, it’s just a bunch of mission levels.

He goes on to say that the whole campaign was basically “bad storytelling”, and that Infinity Ward were “too impressed with themselves”; he also states that Modern Warfare 2 was “the same but…way worse. And it cost more money”. While taking pot-shots at the competition is nothing new in the video game industry, he did have a few good things to say about Uncharted 2, praising how developers Naughty Dog created an excellent storytelling vehicle.

You talk a big talk, Mr. Morgan, but let’s not forget that the first Crysis had a story that didn’t amount to much either. You’ve got some big shoes to fill, but you definitely seem to be qualified for the job.

What do you guys think about these comment? Any of you PC guys worried about Cyrsis 2 making the jump to consoles? What’s your opinion on the trailer? Finally, is anyone going to get this game?

  1. Well Richard Morgan is right about MW2’s story. It doesn’t take a genius to know that the story was a jumble of new locales and encounters. The story shifted so erratically from over-the-top shocking experience to over-the-top shocking experience, and never retained much a deep, coherent story. I didn’t feel attached to the characters, I felt out-of-place as the Task Force did a tour of the world, and while I personally was able to follow the story, it still felt sporadic. The lack of good storytelling made the story basically an insultingly-mindless fragfest, mainly at the beginning of the story before any major plot elements appear.

  2. Wow, sweeet trailer. I hope you get to play in the city, I get reaaally tired of being in the Jungle all the time. And hey, maybe the game will actually run on an existing computer when it’s released XD.

I totally agree with his comments about Modern Warfare 2.

And yeah, a game like this can be played by the console dudes. Nothing special about the first one.

  3. After seeing some stuff on it, I’m pretty excited for it. I’ll most likely get it for PC, but if the graphical differences aren’t very big then I might get it for 360. And it’s good to see that a well known writer is making the jump to videogames, and MW2 bashing is always welcome in my book haha.

  4. MW 2 did have a lot of story problems. But the awesome fun of the game more than makes up for it.

And it may have cost more, but it made a ton more than Crysis would ever make, so I would like to see this guy’s work before I see him start talking crap.

  5. If EA includes that horrid SecuROM DRM with this game, then there’s no way I’m going to spend fifty bucks on it.

  6. I felt COD4’s campaign was way better but MW2’s was still a huge amount of fun!
I was interested in Crysis 1 and my PC would have done a good job of running it, but my PS3 just enthralled me too much. 2nd time lucky maybe?

  7. MW2’s campaign was a slap in the face. The gameplay was smooth, but as im used to BioWare games, I enjoy a good story just as much as gameplay. There are dozens of holes in MW2’s story mode (like Captain Price or how the hell the Russians invaded the east coast)

Crysis 2 looks epically awesome. The original one was great as customisation was flowing and something you could do mid-game. So im really looking forward to it.

@Julez: Crysis 2 is set in NY, so you definitely get to play IN the city.

The Russians invaded thanks to the stolen codes Soap and Roach failed to recover in the snow level. I think, lol. It is kinda confusing.

  9. It still more sense than the most recent Transformers.

And yeah, the satellite ACS module was kind of important, considering it enabled Russia to invade. The narrative was kind of like “it’s important, but meh. You guys can figure it out.”

  10. lol, no.

I meant more like how Russian Aircraft managed to fly thousands of miles over the Arctic. They are no where near of being in reach of the eastern US.

  11. @ Niceman,
The aircraft probably took off from aircraft carriers or maybe some military base closer to America owned by their allies. Maybe. But in 2016 they coul have vehicles which consume far less fuel than they do now. Maybe.

  12. Single player was fun in modern warfare 2 but that’s about it. The story I thought was good although a big broken in places but the multiplayer. Wow the multiplayer was horrendous. The worst multiplayer i’ve ever seen. Call of Duty took a great multiplayer formula and turned it to rubbish by adding helicopters, pave lows, guided missiles and all the other nonsense that makes it almost unplayable. Bad Company was much better 🙂

I’m glad Crysis 2’s writer was slamming it. I actually quite liked the Crysis single player despite the way too open ended levels but it was an interesting game even though it was a bit cliche. Game played great and had a nice concept.

I’m really excited about this new one, especially since it’s in New York, I just hope since they’re developing for consoles they don’t destroy it like call of duty did when they switched to consoles. They have to realize that the play style on the PC and the consoles is completely different. I bought a 360, but it feels different so they have to be able to adapt to that.
