One of the big topics of E3 and around the gaming industry in general right now is bringing 3D to the gaming experience. It seems like everywhere you turn, there’s news of another game getting 3D support, or more demonstrations like Crysis 2 or Killzone 3 that are putting a big emphasis on adding that mystery dimension to the way you play.
Personally, while I don’t care if game companies start going after this, I don’t want to see a future where gamers are forced to have 3D TV’s in order to play what they want to play. Imagine having to buy several pairs of 3D glasses for everyone that wants to play multiplayer on your couch or watch a movie. In fact, EA boss John Riccitello says that 3D games could cost more than current gen games.
However, it doesn’t really matter what I think. What matters is the big honchos. So what do they think? Well, even though Nintendo mocks 3D glasses with their new 3DS promotions, they haven’t ruled out making the next Nintendo console 3D compatible. At Sony’s press conference, they pushed it as the next big thing. And Microsoft? They’re not sure it’s the future.
So, now that you know where all of them stand, it’s time to hear from you guys. Do you want 3D gaming? Go!
I don’t mind. Just don’t charge me extra.
I think the Nintendo 3DS is going about 3D gaming the right way, with a no-glasses approach. I already look like a dork playing video games, but now I have to look like a dork with square tinted glasses? I don’t think so.
I say don’t charge me extra referring to the 3DS because the 3DS does add more to the table than just 3D. For example, the leaked screenshots show much better graphics than what the DS had. Metal Gear Solid 3DS looks very good, if you haven’t seen it. Same with Zelda OoT and Star Fox.
I could care less about 3D. As long as they don’t pull shit like that (Making it mandatory to have 3D to play some games) then I’m fine. Just do the opposite of what Valve did to TF2’s menu recently: Give the option to turn 3D on or off on future games. There’s nothing complicated about that, especially with the money that will be made in the coming year(s) with all these good games coming out.
I don’t care, it’s there as an option if I ever strike an oil well in my yard, but otherwise, leave me be!
Due to vision problems 3D gives me a headache.
I don’t know, 3D Movies aren’t that great, so 3D Games are probably just going to be annoying. I wouldn’t mind some games, but if they start making all games become 3D, I’m going to get a headache.
Your brain doesn’t like 3D for more than a few hours because it’s an illusion.. So for those of us who have a sweet day where we can play 6 or 8 hours of games, we wouldn’t be able to do it in 3D. I really like what 3DS did though because it is “depth” rather than pop out at you, which solves that issue.
There will be some gimmicky games, but it won’t replace regular gaming by any means.
