GamerSushi Asks: Favorite Co-Op Memories?

heavy rainEver since we’ve been able to use the internet to connect our consoles to each other, cooperative play is becoming more and more popular. I’m all for this, as I enjoy taking on waves of baddies with my friends just as much as I like shooting them in the face in a competitive match. There’s just something about co-op play that is altogether different and more satisfying than a straight-up Deathmatch game, but maybe that’s just because I’m a team player.

Both Red Dead Redemption and Battlefield Bad Company 2, two excellent games in their own rights, are getting co-op add-on packs today. Since both these games should be a blast to play with friends, I thought I would find out what your favorite co-op gameplay memories are. Do you have a specific recollection of you and a buddy (or several) holding out against AI antagonists, or maybe a particularly epic campaign playthrough to the wee hours of the morning? Let us know!

  1. I just got RDR’s Coop Mission Pack today, and they’re pretty fun. They’re challenging, but still very fun, even with strangers.

As for past memories, pretty much any coop experience is a good memory for me.
Going through Halo 3’s Campaign on Legendary with my friends was a blast, and I’m psyched to do it again in Reach.
Gears of War 2’s Campaign was fun on coop too, but Horde mode was awesome. The maps in GoW2 were pretty small, but there were some epic shootouts, and my favorite memories came from holding off the balcony on Day One and holding the high ground on Blood Drive. Great stuff, and GoW2 is really what made me realize that I love coop.
After GoW2, when Left 4 Dead came out, I was excited to play the Coop Campaign, and I’m happy to say I can still play No Mercy on Advanced with even just strangers and have a blast, so L4D is one of my favorite games simply because it is so coop-focused, so I’ve had plenty of fond memories. L4D2 was fun, but I had better memories from L4D1.
The Spec Ops missions from MW2 that I played with my friend were fun, but honestly Spec Ops didn’t have any longevity built into it. Sure, you had three difficulties, but that’s not longevity, that’s just difficulty. I wish the missions had more to them because they were really the only genuine fun that I had with MW2 before I started to get pissed with multiplayer’s bullshit. And yes, I keep giving MW2’s MP a chance, and it fucks me over every time, so I’ve given it a boot up its ass and went to play Red Dead.

I’m interested in playing Onslaught, but I haven’t built up the will to pop in BFBC2, and also because my friends aren’t online yet. But I will check it out, it sounds fun. I’m glad that more games are adding coop. I’m a big fan of Coop because it lets you work together with real people and take on an enemy that doesn’t abuse the game and be an asshole all the time. Sure, fighting against real people is theoretically fun, but if you’re outmatched, it gets tediously frustrating, so I approve of this Coop Fad.

  2. my favorite co-op moment was left 4 dead 2, the passing. me and my brother were playing split screen in the sewers. we got distract and the group went ahead. they triggered the alarm while we where still in there. it was an awesome moment of running for your life while mowing down the ones blocking your path was tense and awesome.

  3. In Armed Assault 2 my friend and I held a road against Russian APC’s and swarms of troops. We were in the same game for about three hours holding that road. I had my friend fly out for ammo and supplies at least 4 times cause we ran out of ammo for our machine guns and for our AT launchers to disable the APC’s.

  4. I loved all of Firefight in ODST, especially getting that one Vidmaster achievement, and Gears is an absolute blast (me and my friend played Gears 2 start to finish the day it came out).

  5. My cousin and I played the L4D Demo (PC) together a lot…

The same cousin and I turned off all penalties in NHL 94 on SNES, then he would go body check the goalie and I would score…over and over again… we were 6 or 7 years old, okay? – Awesome memories though, still talk about it once and a while.

  6. Pretty much any moment when i’m playing left 4 dead with my friend.

Last time we were playing on Dark Carnival in L4D2 and then he pushed me off of the roller coaster >_>
We also fight over who gets to use the chainsaw.

In L4D1 my friend and I played a few rounds of survival last week, it was pretty damn awesome.

  7. I remember going over to my friend’s house pretty much every day one week and just powering through the campaign of Halo 2. I maintain that to be my best Co-op experience ever.

  8. Conflict Desert Storm 1&2, Conflict Global Storm and Timesplitters 2&3 were source of much co-op memories. Red Dead is now filling that gap that has been absent for oh so long.

  9. Mine would be Army Of Two, it is just a very fun game to play when you are sitting next to your friend trying to get past the enemies that have you pinned down. The other one that I have the most memories of is Kirby Airride for the NGC. My friend, his sister and I would have huge fights, races, and we would have bases that we would try to protect while we used our imagination to make scenarios like help each other go to the store or be construction workers. We also did that in Mario Cart: Double Dash. Those is the strongest co-op memories I have and they are also the earlyest.

  10. totally the LOTR games for me my brother and i fiended those games beat em wicked fast and tried to unlock all the characters as fast as possible
