While I love playing shooters on both consoles and PC these days, one thing I miss from my more hardcore PC gaming days is the ability for full control customization via the keyboard. It was nice to map any feature to any button, and really helped you tailor your style of play in a unique way.
Tonight, while playing another bout of Halo: Reach, Nick randomly freaked out because his controller was set differently than he normally had it. So, as a result, he asked all of us whether we played shooters inverted or non-inverted. I thought I’d bring that question here.
For me, I used to always play inverted on controllers, non-inverted on a mouse. Eventually some weird switch flipped in my brain and now I play exclusively non-inverted. I’m not really sure how this happened, but it occurred during a playthrough of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. I was forever changed, apparently.
What about you guys? How do you play? Go!
Inverted only ever works when flying a plane, otherwise… you push up and you point up… makes sense yeah?
Non-inverted with slandered wasd and r as reload or I can’t function. I almost always bind custom keys depending on the game and especially in valve games where I usually bind certain voice commands to a key or bind a key to turn the sensitivity up if I am in a sticky situation. Usually bind a key to fire a pistol off as fast as the game will allow which is especially useful for L4D. This is all done via the console fyi.
I know someone in my clan who, no joke, binds mouse0 to forwards and mouse1 to backwards.
Non-inverted. Up is up because it’s up.
I was looking for a great comic by the official uk playstation 2 magazine which had a great joke about inverse controls but for the life of me I couldn’t find it on the internet. 🙁
I’m with clanfever. When I used to play console games, I’d use inverted for games involving flight.
But if you wanna talk mice, I have my sensitivity set low. In CS, I swipe my mouse full accross my pad to turn almost 1/4 (90 degrees). I’m serious.
Oh no, where are my fellow inverters?!
We are losing bad…
Down is the new up.
I voted for inverted. It just feels so much more natural to me.
I also golf and play hockey with my left hand, but I’m right handed for everything else. I’m a weird person.

According to the poll, up is the new up.
Also Julez, that is ludicrously low for sensitivity. I think mine in CS was pretty low, but nothing that crazy.

Yeah, I was just quoting a Radiohead song. I use normal. Cause I’m not a freak.
Yeah pretty much normal for actual shooting and inverted for flight is the usual it’s kinda first nature for shooters, like ClanFever said when i want to aim up i move the controll stick or mouse or light gun up and vice versa.
