Well fellow gamers, it’s now officially December, so that means that all around the land, people are jumping into holiday mode. It’s kind of funny actually, that once November passes everyone runs around like crazy all the way until Christmas-ish time, and then everything gets calm again. At least that’s the way it is around here.
As we’ve been discussing, winter and holiday season naturally means one thing for all of us and our interests: games, and lots of them. Over the years, I know that all of us have received a bountiful harvest of great gaming goodness, and we’ve played games until we couldn’t stand them any longer. Traditionally for me, December is the time that I play more games than any other.
I’m setting all of this up to give you some sweet gaming questions, naturally. As always with our getting-to-know-you type games, feel free to answer with as much or as little as you like. Answer to the best of your ability. Go!
1. What is the best gaming gift you’ve ever received?
2. What game did you want most for a gift one year, but didn’t get?
3. Which game would you want to show to your family the most? Least?
4. What would you think if you got Move/Kinect as a gift?
5. What game do you expect to play most during the holidays?
6. If money wasn’t an object, what gaming related thing would you buy?
7. If you could get an early present of an unreleased title, which would it be?
1. PS2 or N64. N64 came first and I played it so much. PS2 though, I used much more heavily. I played on it for HOURS.
2. Shoot, I dont even know. Usually I bought my games. Probably one of the GTA games. I would have to go ge those myself.
3. New Super Mario Wii. Least: F.E.A.R. or a similar game. So gorey Im sure they would be appalled.
4. Will I actually use this?
5. Hopefully more AC Brotherhood. Prob Black Ops though
6. If multiple items, a big new entertainment system. If one thing, probably a nice new TV. Normally I would think computer for online gaming, but I hardly use my comp for gaming anymore. If TV doesn’t count, I would get a PS3. Mine are kind of lame.
7. T.E.S. V Oh my god, I would explode
1. Nintendo 64 without a doubt. It came with Shadows of the Empire, and I was glued to that for days.
2. I wanted Bonestorm but only got Lee Carvelo’s Putting Challenge.
3. I’d want to show them Uncharted 2, I think they’d dig it. Either that or Assassin’s Creed 2 or Brotherhood, just because of how picturesque it is. Red Dead for that reason as well. Least would probably be any Call of Duty, God of War, Splatterhouse, Dead Rising.
4. “Man, another thing I have to dust?”
5. Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam.
6. Flat screen HD TV with HDMI input and a sick ass speaker set up. Probably a nice pair of headphones too, for late night sessions (I live in an apartment). Second would be a gaming rig so powerful it would give Skynet self-esteem issues.
7. Mass Effect 3. A million times. Or Star Wars: The Old Republic.
1. NINTENDO SIXTY-FOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRR! But honestly, I was a young, innocent child and my life of video games was just beginning. Ah. Wondrous times. Every experience was so new. My brother and I got the N64 for Christmas back when I was, like, 6 or 7, so I enjoyed the crisp, cool air, and the stunning visuals of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time with absolute bliss and amazement. So technically, the N64 + LoZOot was the best video game gift I ever got. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga comes in a close second because I had some great memories with that game, and the fun and hilarity picked up quickly once I salvaged it from beneath its festive cloak.
2. Hmmm. Can’t say I never got a gift that I REALLY wanted. I never asked for many gifts at Christmastime, so I usually just narrowed it down to the few presents that I definitely wanted and needed, and it all worked out.
3. I’d want to show off Shadow of the Colossus or Fallout 3 to friends and family and grandparents in order to demonstrate how awesome the video game medium can be. I’d probably hold off on Call of Duty because I’d have to quickly mute everyone online.
4. …PpffphffhghaaAAAAAAHAAHAAHAAHAHAHAHAAA! Alright, let’s go donate it to the community center for some cash.
5. Whenever my brother comes home from college, we play Persona 3 or Okami or some other single-player RPG or Action-Adventure game, and it’s always a lot of fun to chill out with a game like the ones we grew up with and relive the old days of my brother using the controller and me pointing out all the hints and items and stuff. I might even play Thousand Year Door and he can watch because that’s MY RPG, while he gets all the other ones. lol I imagine that’s how I’ll be spending Winter Vacation, with some Black Ops, and perhaps some Halo Reach if I can rally up some broskijs, thrown in there for good measure.
6. A PS3 and LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2, along with every other cool game that I feel like checking out but don’t because I don’t like wasting money. I have OCD Frugality when it comes to money, even when it comes down to quarters.
7. Minecraft: Fractle Pixel Quest.
1. I think it would have to be Final Fantasy III for the SNES. I played that thing so much.
2. I think I always got what I wanted b/c I was always careful to let my mom know the ONE thing I wanted most. She always made sure she got it.
3. Most? Probably Final Fantasy. Least? Grand Theft Auto III. “Look, ma! I’m killing hookers on Jesus’s birthday!” (Actual qutoe)
4. I think I would play with it, but I would know deep down that the person who got it for me does not know me at all.
5. Black Ops/New Vegas/Gran Turismo 5
6. A bigger HDTV
7. LittleBigPlanet 2.
1. Sega Genesis. I would say Nintendo 64, with all the memories I gained from that playing Turok, Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooi, and all those great titles, but without the Sega Genesis I wouldn’t be a gamer. Rocket Knight Adventures, Comix Zone, Vectorman and Sonic The Hedgehog 2 are what got me hooked to gaming, and without them I wouldn’t be posting this comment.
2. Super Mario 64. I’ve only actually played it at friends’ houses.
3. I always want to show Little Big Planet to my friends and family, mostly because of its universal appeal. I probably would refrain from showing off my plethora of Doom mods though; without the right context some of them would probably make me look like a scary person.
4. Indifferent. It’s not really something that I’m excited for.
5. Little Big Planet, Super Meat Boy, some X-Com… well, that is, until the 22nd. Then it depends on whatever games I can take with me to Disneyland.
6. I would probably spend the money on gaming development tools like 3DS opposed to something for playing games. I’ve already got most of what I want.
7. Little Big Planet 2. The more I see about it the more I crave it.
1 – Has to be the N64 my sister and I got for christmas in 1997, possibly 1998, can’t remember exactly. My parents said it was “to share” but you can imagine how well that went down with my 9 or 10 year old self. I needn’t have worried though, my sister really wasn’t all that interested. It came with Super Mario 64 and i just remember starting it up for the first time and 10-year-old me knew heaven was real… Ah, good times.
2 – I never really asked for games as gifts. Back around the N64 time I wasn’t old enough to know what games were good, and my parents rarely bought me any as it was. And once I was able to decide which ones I wanted, my parents had started giving me pocket money so they said I could save up for my own games. If I had to pick though I’d have to say Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. To this day I have never owned my own copy, I have only ever borrowed a friends to play
3 – I’m sure if I could get my Dad to play through one of the Mass Effects he might stop getting on my case about how terrible games are and that I shouldn’t be wasting my time on them… Oh who am I kidding, its never going to happen. At least Mum’s a bit more open-minded. As for the least, probably the pokemon games that I still play – I can’t help it if they are awesome.
4 – Great, now I have to spend my own money to buy a Xbox or PS3 to go with it. I guess it wouldn’t be too bad, free gift is a free gift after all. It’s not something I’d go out and buy, but if someone is going to buy it for me, who am I to complain.
5 – Probably Donkey Kong Returns and/or Kirby’s Epic Yarn when it finally comes out in Australia.
6 – Every console made, a collection of their best games and a time machine so I could play them all.
7 – Mass Effect 3, or Banjo Kazooie 3 (make it Rare!!!)
1. I’ll have to agree with the person that said the Nintendo 64. I remember wanting that thing for Christmas so badly. My mom surprised us with it on Christmas morning, and I couldn’t help but play it even as she was shouting at me to get ready for grandma’s house. In addition to that, a few Christmases ago I got Modern Warfare, and that turned out awesome.
2. The year the Playstation came out, I was dying for it. It turns out later that my dad was actually going to buy one for me and my brother, but my mom convinced him to buy us sweaters instead. Thanks, mom. We ended up buying one with our own money a year or so later.
3. I said this on the podcast, but I’d love to show people Shadow of the Colossus as a testament to what games can be. Alternatively, Mass Effect 2. Last year some of my in-laws watched my brother play Uncharted 2 and they were really enjoying themselves.
4. Honestly, I would probably be similar to Anthony here. I’d play it and maybe even enjoy it a little, but in the back of my mind I’d consider it probably the same as the Nintendo Wii, knowing I would get it out of my system over the first couple of days. I still haven’t gotten hands on time with either system, though, which is sad.
5. After I finish up Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, it’s on to Dead Rising 2, Gran Turismo 5, Enslaved and Call of Duty: Black Ops.
6. I would probably buy a huge HDTV, even though my 47″ is awesome. Barring that, arcade machines.
7. Mass Effect 3 or Uncharted 3, probably. I want those games enough to slap a bear.
1. I’d agree with you John, about the Sega Genesis, but that’s because after that my parents wouldn’t buy us gaming systems anymore. I had to buy my own. Ahhh, D&D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun…and Shining Force!
2. Nothing that sticks in my mind, actually. Growing up, like I said, we didn’t really get games as gifts, so all of them 🙂
3. Man, if they don’t like games now, I’m not gonna make them by showing them something like SotC. I’d play Rock Band 3 with them, though, and keep away Final Fantasy. That’s gotta be one of the most boring games to watch.
4. Meh. I’d rather have the Move, since it seems like some games might actually be worth it. The only reason I’d even keep Kinect is so my girlfriend could play Dance Central…and me, too, probably, after a few drinks.
5. Heh heh…Demon’s Souls
6. I’d buy a 3DTV, I guess. I know there aren’t any games yet, but I’d be interested to try them when there are, and since money isn’t an object…
7. Project Dark…and the Ico / SotC HD collection.
