One of the frustrating things about loving gaming as much as we all do is that there’s no possible way to get through everything you want to play without becoming something of a loner or forsaking all social responsibilities. There are simply too many great games that deserve our attention, and we have to make sacrifices at times. I use the word sacrifice incredibly loosely here, because we are basically choosing between several awesome things.
A big check on my gaming “to-do” list over the last, I don’t know, decade has been to give Final Fantasy VI the playthrough it deserves. For years, I’ve been hearing that it’s considered the pinnacle of the series. Since I’ve been in the mood to play a classic RPG, what better thing to do than knock this towering colossus of gaming down from its judgmental perch and finally skin its hide.
In short, I have to say that I simply love this game. It’s got everything that I’ve been dying for in recent RPGs: memorable characters, turn based combat, a sweeping story, a fantastic world. It really is a testament to just how great the game is that eighteen years after its release, I can pick it up and enjoy it for hours on end. Considering you can grow a full fledged adult in that time, I’d say that’s impressive.
This got me thinking about the question of classic replays. What are the gaming classics that you recently played for the first time after neglecting them for years? What games are on your list that you’ve always wanted to try? Go!
Eddy, the older we get, the harder it is to put in the time we would like into games. I’ve been playing video games since the Atari days, we even had a Commodore 64. As kids, we had endless time to explore everything a game has. Now it just takes to long. Perfect example, it took me over 1 year to do everything I wanted on FF12. Crazy right? And there is still stuff left over to accomplish on that.
A classic game that I would love to play through would be Secret of Evermore. Back then I was so focused on Secret of Mana & Chrono Trigger, I totally ignored this game.
But for a game that I finally did get back to recently, Final Fantasy Tactics. Thanks to the PSN I’ve been able to play FFT quite a bit on my big screen & PSP. It is truly a great game, that I wished I made more time for. Once again, FF7, FF8 (yeah I know most don’t like FF8, but I really like it) & FF9 took up most of my time during that period of gaming.
I really miss those old games… I find that most games today just don’t seem up to par with those greats from the SNES & PSX.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is still fun, and I just got done playing that from start to finish a week ago. Now I’m playing Majora’s Mask for the first time, and it can get confusing in some spots, buuut if anything it’s the minigames between dungeons that slow me down. lol It’s still an excellent game and I hope I have a chance to really explore all of it and enjoy it. I feel like I get so nervous because of the 3-day time limit that I don’t relax and explore, but I must remember that I have the ocarina. I friggin hate time limits. Anyway, Majora’s Mask is awesome, especially its music, and its dark atmosphere is so…epic! And child-friendly!
In the past year or so, I’ve knocked out MGS & MGS2, which were on my list for years, both of which held up amazingly well despite their age. Stalled out on Chrono Cross, but I blame Anthony for removing my source of motivation by stalling out too. Hoping to get to MGS3 (in HD, maybe?), FF9, KOTOR, and Baldur’s Gate 2 this year. I’m not holding my breath though, given my backlog of reasonably lengthy recent titles, not to mention anything else releasing this year.
Once I get a new computer, I’m going to go crazy on steam and pick up a whole bunch of titles that I’ve put off getting while I was having “technical difficulties”

I think I wrote an article about this once…
It’s great that all these old RPGs are seeing a re-release on the DS because I finally have the opportunity to go back and play Chrono Trigger! Not that I have yet, but I will!
