GamerSushi Asks: What Genres Do You Suck At?

sucking at marvel vs capcom 3

How’s your holiday weekend going, GamerSushi-ites? Me, I’ve been tucking into the Gears of War 3 beta again after doing a marathon Portal 2 session where I polished off the whole game, both single and co-op. I’m pretty sure that we’re going to do a “What Are You Playing” sometime this weekend, so we’ll table that discussion for later. Segueing from that, I am planning on checking out Mortal Kombat soon, which frightens me mostly because fighting games are one of the genres that I totally suck at.

To be totally honest, in a multiplayer standpoint, I’m really only good at first person shooters. Even though I’m loving the Gears 3 gameplay, I’ll admit that my Kill/Death ratio is pretty terrible, with one often outpacing the other (guess which one). The same thing goes for real time strategy games, where I can maybe hold my own in a campaign or a comp stomp scenario, but once I get out into the wild, everything just goes right down the tubes.

All that pales in comparison to how badly I perform at fighting games like Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom 3, Tekken and the like. I’ll maybe win the odd round, but more often than not I’m getting Hadoukened back to last week.

It’s rare that anyone admits that they’re bad at games, but we’re all friends here, so go ahead and let us know what genres you aren’t that great with. Fighting, racing, shooting? Drop them comment bombs, yo.

  1. RTS’s I can’t do. Not even single player. Usually, regardless of however the faction(?) is supposed to be played, I’ll usually just put up a few defenses, put some weak forces to pace around my base, and then just build a massive force of everything I could conceivably need until I hit the unit limit, and then just give them the order to kill everything in some general direction.

JRPG’s and even WRPG’s that are less narrative-heavy and more…MMO-y I just don’t have the patience for. As in, I already have to ration time so I’m not going to spend it grinding.

  2. It’s not so much that I suck at it, but I don’t play enough racing games.
The last game I played was Test Drive 4(?) and I remember having the steering wheel and pedals for that. It was great. Last year I tried playing one of the racers on the PS3. That’s just impossible.
Mario Kart Wii here I come!

  3.
RTS. PC or console, I just don’t have the patience.
This. My best friend plays a lot of Supreme Commander, he usually only plays against the AI, but even then its not uncommon for a single match to take 6 or more hours. I just don’t have the time and patience for that. If I can’t overrun the opponent within 15-20 minuts at the absolute max, I’m done.

  4. What Anthony said. I’ve never played an RTS I could handle. I have to manage at my job, I don’t want to manage when I play games. Just put me in the boots of THAT *points at screen* soldier and I’ll kill all the Zerglings.

  5. Online shooters. I suck at them badly 🙁
And I suck at sim games if I haven’t got my wheel with me.

And I suck at rpg’s, I too impatient to walk everywhere to get to some thing I had missed.

    I actually enjoy rts games.

  6. I’m glad to see the feeling about RTS’s is mutual here!
Many of my friends play them all the time, but I just never got into the pace of them. Patience is an issue aswell. I know that they’re very awesome games in general, which require a lot of skill, and in some cases, Teamwork, but I just don’t think i’ve put enough hours into them to catch their drift.
If I were to ever play them with you guys, I’d prolly Cheese the crap out of you!

  7. I’m actually really bad with first-person shooters. I’m one of those people who sometimes randomly goes super-saiyan on other players, and other times I’m the first one out in a match. That’s not to say I don’t have fun, though.

That said, however, I’m absolutely terrible at casual/social games. Wii Sports is not my cup of tea, and I used to play those stupid Facebook games (mainly Mafia Wars, or Mafia Whores, as I call it) until I got tired of being killed all the time.

  8. RPG games I suck at math so I can never get the weapon damage to hit ratio to a good level or make a character that can last in a stand up fight. I have to use a strategy guide or an online guide to help build the characters.

  9. I absolutely SUCK at old school side-scrollers on the SNES or NES, ones like Mario and Super Mario. My god I die SO MUCH at those games.

  10. RTS’s, racing sims and ye olde side scrollers. The old Mario and Metroid games and the likes of Gunstar Heroes are too difficult for me to enjoy.
