GamerSushi Asks: LAN Gaming Favorites?

Fight Night Round 4

Hey readers, how’s your weekend going? Me, I’ve been doing a few things, including winning my first ever StarCraft 2 match! I know that’s not very impressive, but considering I haven’t finished placing yet, this is a pretty big deal for me. The guy I beat was probably even more Forever Bronze than I am, but still, I’ll take a victory when I can get one.

Besides that, I’ve been doing the Gears of War 3 beta with Eddy and having a LAN gaming marathon with my friends. I know that LAN parties typically refer to linking a bunch of PCs together, but I use it as a catch-all term for getting together with friends in the same room and playing a bunch of favorites. So far we’ve done Age of Empires 2, StarCraft 2, Halo 3 and right now we’re beating each other up in Fight Night Round 4. My poor boxer facsimile, he just can’t win a match. That may be my fault though.

Since I’m gaming with pals today, I was wondering what sort of games you play when you want to trash your friends. RTS games, FPS games, good old classic brawlers? Also, if any of you PC players want to rage on me for misusing “LAN party” by referring to consoles, go ahead. I can take it.

  1. Never played LAN but always wanted to.
FPS’s are my group’s form of cool down. Nothing speaks more to us than some BFBC or a private lobby in CoD. Also, Smash Bros.

  2. LAN makes even the most ridiculous game fun. Take, for instance, Halo 3. I remember doing a system link with two other Xboxes and three tv’s at a friend’s house. We spent the whole night snacking, fragging, listening to Korn and Eminem, and generally having an amazing time. Maybe I’ll do it again in a few years and get a bunch of Captain Morgan and various other odds and ends. 😉

  3. I’m mostly a PC gamer but I’m not raging that you use LAN with Consoles…you can now. You can set up Local Area Networks with the Xbox 360 for sure (I’ve done it) and most likely with the PS3. Just playing in the same room, not necessarily LAN, but it can be, so I’ll just assume that it is.

BTW I would like a LAN game of some shooter, except the teams actually strategize and work together, like a…like a… whatchacallit…a TEAM there we go! Think of that, team work on Call of Duty. Now think of that with a straight face. Yeah, it would be cool.

  4. LAN, when talking about console games, seems right to me. You connect to a local network of consoles to play together. Sounds like its right to me.

Also I only ever LAN with consoles. PCs are too much work. Most we ever did was all play Diablo II together in one room on shitty laptops about a year ago.

I like to play FPS games on LAN. To me Halo was always a ton of fun. Halo 2 will forever be the best LAN game on earth. The last game I LANed was probably Halo 3 or Reach. The only other one I really have experience with is Super Smash Bros, all of them. Thats sadly kind of it for me. I dont really do too much LANing anymore. With my friends being so far spread its easier just to link up over live.

  5. I LAN a lot.
We usually do PC Counter Strike, Dota, and Starcraft.
We played Empires Lan alot as well.
    On the Console side.
I feel that Halo has supported Lan the most as you can do four screen.
We also played COD WAW once but it was only a four people free for all, so wasn’t so epic.
Its really sad that we don’t lan up as often as Xbox Gold is available(IT COST WAY TOO MUCH) but we still love it.

  6. Nothing wrong with consoles set up on a LAN! I miss my LAN days, although it was always PC. We never had one with more than 10 people. Played lots of CS 1.6, Battlefield, Quake III Arena and the like. All the classics. Some of them played Starcraft/Warcraft but I’m not an FPS guy at all.

The only real advantage of a PC LAN is sharing all your pirated goodies =D.

Our CS Clan is actually having their annual LAN in Chicago next weekend and I’m sad I can’t go. Last year there was about 40 or 50 members that showed up… Hoping to go next year!

  7. Just wanted to say, what was the biggest LAN party that anybody actually had?
Mine topped out at 30 people.

  8. I’m dying to LAN again. We used to play lots of CS, Soldier of Fortune, Jedi Knight II and Warcraft 3 whenever we did our big LANing extravaganzas. This needs to happen again soon.
