GameFly Introducing Digital Beta and Unlimited PC Play

GameflyWhile PC gaming is one of my new favorite things, one area where I feel it is lacking is an avenue to rent games in a way that makes sense. Maybe someone wants to change that.

Today, GameFly announced that this holiday season, they’re launching their own digital client. Here’s the curious part: the digital client is going to allow an unlimited PC play option, where Mac/PC gamers can download as many PC games as they want, as long as they are GameFly subscribers. It’s going to launch with 1,500 titles and grow from there. If this all sounds a bit too good to be true, you can hop over and sign up for the GameFly digital beta, which launches September 8.

My first reaction to reading this particular piece of news was a dumbfounded “what?” Looking at it again, I’m still not sure how I feel. It’s so casually tossed out there it’s hard to believe it would be a big deal, but the implications seem like they could be huge. It’s almost exactly how I felt when Valve was talking about Steam on the PS3. That “this could change everything” feeling. Seems like this could shake the PC gaming market a little in unexpected ways. But maybe that’s just me.

Your thoughts?

  1. ? In the video when he clicks to download Assassin’s Creed you can see $49.99 beside it… I don’t see where it says anything about unlimited or FREE play…

    1. Yes, you can buy the games if you want to, but if you’re a subscriber (which carries a monthly fee), you can play as many games as you want… which the video says. Basically, they’re trying to replace Steam for people that want to buy games, and provide a rental service for GameFly members to play as many PC games as they want.

  2. All it says is “Gamefly members play as many games as they want”. Steam could say the same thing, you can play as many games as you want as long as you pay for them lol. I just figured it was just ambiguous wording, because usually when there is free stuff on the internet, they put ***FREE*** or ***UNLIMITED ACCESS*** all over it.

    1. I’m still stuck on where you got the idea that this would be free. A quick ctrl+f shows that I didn’t use the word free in the post once.

    Incepted.

    BWONG!!

  5. Some games I may see that possible for, but Im with you, I think this sounds too good to be true. So does this mean that the fee monthly is going to be bigger than the MMO or games fee (assuming it has one?) I wouldn’t find it a good business model if they charge $10 a month but the game wants $15 a month. I dont get how subscription games would work. Also what about games that would require an individual to sign up for a service so the game can be played? Sounds fishy, but they probably have thought of most of this

  6. =) I didn’t say YOU said they’d be free, talking about the video… Just saying, if all you have to pay is your subscription fee and then you can download and install as many games as you want for ONLY that cost, the games are essentially free. And if it’s unlimited install and play as long as you want, it just doesn’t make any sense.

How many games are you allowed to have at once with GameFly if you get them in the mail? I’m sure you’ll only be allowed to have that many installed or something like that. Which is still fine… It just doesn’t make any sense!

It depends on what plan you have.
