Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Gameplay

A few weeks ago, Valve made the official announcement for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a long-awaited follow-up to Counter-Strike. At PAX this past weekend, Valve followed that up with a trailer and some good old-fashioned gameplay. And I mean that in every sense of the word.

It’s nice to watch a whole round or so of this game in motion, and I have to say I like what I see so far. I’m not sure how I feel about a few things like the Molotov cocktails or the T skins, but as of now it seems like a great expansion to the game we all know and love. For some reason, it was the sounds that really made me want to play it, more than the updated visuals.

So what do you guys think of this gameplay for CS: GO? Still needs improvement? Not sold? Throwing your wallet at the screen? Go!

  1. I’m pretty much sold on this, but I’ve got a few nitpicks, like the grenades being way too small and the model for the M4 being different in third and first person. Other than that yeah, shut up and take my money.

  2. One of the CT’s was named Chet. Concidence? I think not.

But yeah, super excited for CS:GO. It looks great.

That was mentioned as we all gathered around the monitor like pups anxious for a taste of mother’s milk.

  4. Looks the same with different skins and sounds. That’s not a new game Valve! You’re not fooling anyone.

Then it proceeds to sell millions of copies and Treyarch starts making the new skins for next year.

As for the counterstike game, I think it is ok but I am not going to be spending my money on it; at least if it is a full priced release. The graphic’s update doesn’t seem that much, plus if I wanted the nostalgia boost, I would just go play the 1.6 or source.

I am not the gamer who likes more of the same, I don’t have the amount of money needed to buy a bunch of games. I already picked the game I want for next year, Skyrim. The only game that might change that is Deus Ex. Looking forward to that review by the way.

  7. I’m surprised there’s not more excitement about this. I wanted exactly this – an updated Counter-Strike. I didn’t want things to be different at all. I mean, it’s Counter-Strike. And Counter-Strike rules.

Also, this is going to be a downloadable XBLA and PSN release… meaning I think we’re only looking at like $15-$20.

  8. A lot of the trailers I’ve seen have made the weapons look really tiny in the view model’s hands. That is literally the only problem that I have with this so far.

I’d usually have a problem with Call of Duty or something releasing the exact same game every year, but Counter-Strike is the original bare-bones modern warfare shooter with complete balance and ability to add skins and maps. I’ve seen that they actually are adding new weapons, so it’s not just a reskin of the game (like CS:S was) but it’s not changing it so much that it’s no longer Counter-Strike (like Counter-Strike: Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes kinda did).

I’m just eagerly waiting to see if they somehow reimplement the riot shield. I loved having shield/knife duels in 1.6 and I’d love to see that return, but in a more balanced form.

As long as they keep to that price, I’m interested. I never got into CS, but I’ve played it and this looks really like the same exact thing with a few minor upgrades, I was kinda hoping for something a bit more.

You already got that with Source, which was such a disappointment compared to the original. If this is CS PROMOD (which is what I’ve always wanted) then I might play it (although PROMOD is free…). If you don’t know promod, its CS:Source with the “feeling” of 1.6

“With no disrespect to Valve Software or Turtle Rock Studios, the project arose from the opinion of many in the professional community: namely that Counter-Strike: Source was lacking in many key areas, and could be vastly improved upon. Much of the Counter-Strike community had been expecting CS:Source to be original CS gameplay with better graphics, and unfortunately, that’s not at all what CS:Source ended up being.”

    1. @Julez

What evidence do we have that this isn’t more like a CS Promod?

Also, I put zero stock in Wiki pages that think they speak for the majority of players. Did they take a survey? How do they know?

  11. Hmm, definitely has an old-school vibe – never was a CS player, but I might be interested enough to give this a shot. Hopefully it does indeed fit into the XBLA/PSN title price range.

On another subject, reading headlines about this game has tuned me in to the importance of the last word of a game’s title. The first thing my brain registers is when I see these articles is Offensive screenshots, Offensive preview, Offensive gameplay, etc. Makes me wonder if it’s really that bad, or if they took some cues from Bulletstorm.

  12. I am so pumped for this game I could run a marathon with Eddy and almost beat him. I just hope that this game doesn’t do to CS:S what L4D2 did to L4D1. ‘twould be most unfortunate.
Other than that, Whether or not this game is great, valve already has my money.
Wait…so there are dedicated servers right? Because if there isn’t I’m going to cry away my childhood memories. All of them.

  13. @ Eddy

What I meant is I AM really hoping this is more like Promod. That would make me play it. I’m also very interested for cross-platform play… lol… got a few scores to settle with some friends who only play Xbox/PS3.

I would agree with the article because we know a lot of the “hardcore” players were disappointed by Source and are still playing 1.6… Sure, there are a lot less good public servers than there used to be, but that just means the people who are still playing have a tighter community.

    Just checked Steam:

    Current Peak(today)
    56,494 63,234 Counter-Strike: Source
    55,316 61,830 Counter-Strike

So they’re beating us by 1000 people right now. It’s still an interesting fact for a 12 year old game versus it’s “updated” self.

    1. Still, that’s no proof at all the majority of all 1.6 people are dissatisfied with Source. There’s no data to back up that claim. By that same number, I could claim that the majority of the CS:S community was supremely satisfied with Source. But it wouldn’t make it true.

  14. I know I’m going to get this. Probably on my PC, and definitely on my xbox to play with my friends. I myself, have logged much more time in CS:S instead of the original, but that is just personal preference.

    I do have some nit-picks:

1)The first-person weapon models should look like the third-person weapon models.

    2) UPDATE THE BUY-MENU IMAGES (especially when the weapons look so different). It really bothered me how .

    3) The biggest thing for me is the character models, I think the models shouldn’t have Kevlar or helmets on, unless those items are bought! It seriously bothers me! When I heard about CS:GO, the only thing I was really hoping for was this change! If they changed nothing else but that and the graphic updates, I would still buy it! The same thing should be done with nightvision goggles, they already do a similar thing with grenades appearing on the characters’ belts. The items should also change the hitboxes, if someone is wearing a helmet, it should have it’s own hitboxes, if a low-caliber round hits the helmet, it barely does anything, but if a similarly sized round hit in the face, (where the helmet doesn’t cover) that player would take plenty of damage if not immediately killed. But the models will have to still look good (that goes without saying… but whatever, I’m redundant), and not just like the CS:S guns that got superglued to the characters’ backs inexplicably when they switched weapons.

Yea, I know, I’m really picky about the little things. But I am really looking forward to this.

  15. Crap typo. “It really bothered me how.” they kept the frag grenade buy-menu image from the original CS when the grenade looks much different in CS:S.

  16. Not really a big fan of the whole visual style. The weapons/hands just look weird to me.

I’m honestly not as excited for this as I thought I’d be.
