Battlefield 3 Roll Call

battlefield 3 roll call

Ten-hut soliders, Battlefield 3 has finally hit and we need to know who here has donned their war faces and are hunting for dog tags. I played a bit of co-op and multiplayer last night and I’ve got to say, every concern I had with the Beta has been addressed and then some. While the co-op is a little bland in its design (still fun, though), multiplayer brings the game back to the feel that Battlefield 2 had, and that’s giant 64-player battles, tanks, helicopters and jets all mingling with infantry warfare. More than once I said that a few maps felt like Strike at Karkand, and this is a very good thing.

I didn’t have any problems with Battlelog or any in-game stuff either, so I’m pretty impressed with how DICE managed to iron that all out. There was a bit of lag on the servers, but that’s to be expected of a launch-day game (and it was actually working, unlike Bad Company 2 at launch). Joining a game with a party is now pretty effortless and if you happen to get separated there’s an actual in-game Squad browser now. There’s a “Command Rose” too, but I don’t think it’s entirely functional right now as you can’t call for ammo or health and your character doesn’t shout out the message you select.

So, is anyone else playing Battlefield 3? What system are you on? What are your thoughts on the three different modes? Go go go!

  1. I went to bed at 3 am, go figure. SOOO much fun, and I’m really glad that my PC was able to handle it. 64 madness, tons of weapons and fun. Some awesome teamplay, even when I can kill anything, I can still help :D.

Been playing Rush and Conquest, Rush is good, Conquest…dear God.

    Also the campaign is…nice.

  2. Yeah, I saw you playing Co-op on launch day. I was having a hell of a time on multiplayer with my own friends. With skype backing up the comms, we went completely all out on the game. And it was as epic and amazing as the hype. Most of the maps are fresh and varied, (I’m staying away from Metro and Caspian Border though).

I haven’t tried Co-op yet though I plan to soon. The story was a pretty big flop. It followed the CoD forumla where you just go around and shoot people when their heads stick out of cover, with the occasional vehicle gameplay. Multiplayer is absolutely amazing however. If the game only included multiplayer, Battlefield 3 wouldn’t lose not much, if anything at all.

  3. Unfortunately I’m stuck with the 360 version until I get to build my computer in June. Due to being busy and the servers being terrible, I have yet to play I full game.

  4. BBC, instead of using Canada Post like the last dozen times, chose Purolator (Canadian courier) to deliver my PS3 version.

So instead of going to my local postal outlet this evening, where CP would have re-routed the package, I had to reschedule for delivery to my home on Friday (my day off). No, they couldn’t change the delivery address to my work and try again, Best Buy won’t allow that.

    Sigh.

  5. When I finally had the chance to play, it was enjoyable. I got in on the Xbox and it was damn near impossible to play with my friends the first 24 hours. I couldnt even start the single player when the servers were down, the opening cutscene just kept repeating, apparently its was a common problem but I can imagine all the Call of Duty players trying Battlefield and having that first impression. Anyway, this looks like the game Ill be balancing with Gears for a while.

Anyone get the Heatseekers for the Jet yet? Theyre fantastic

  6. Managed to get mine today. Played a little campaign and that soured me somewhat…didn’t like that at all, but jumped in multiplayer and my hope was restored. Fantastic multiplayer experience just like battlefield of old, loving every second.

  7. So I started playing (finally) last night, and what an utter disappointment. I knew I was settling a little bit by getting the 360 version, but come on. I haven’t touched the single player (and probably won’t), and the gameplay is great, but dear God the absence of the extra 40 players the PC version has is terribly obvious. While 12 on 12 worked fine in BFBC2, in BF3 I find myself wandering everywhere to find enemies. Vehicles sit in their spawn points in little vehicle ghost towns, and half of my team is sitting by the jet spawn mashing B. I always played Rush in BC2, and I thought that because it had objectives it would cause all the players on the map to converge in certain areas, but this was rarely the case. Conquest was even worse. If I had to describe BF3 on console in one word, barren instantly comes to mind. A huge disappointment, and I’m mad I’ll have to wait until June to get the PC version when I build my PC.

  8. I was really pumped for this game after seeing the fighter jets and BASE jumping and the whole thing with the earthquake, but now I’m hearing that the singleplayer mode isn’t very good. That’s pretty much all I care about, and if that mode is lackluster, then I guess I won’t be buying the game. When it comes to shooters, I don’t give two shits about multiplayer.

With little knowledge of the game, it sounds like the PC version is awesome and the console version is fun, but gimped. Which is odd b/c they are trying to upend Call of Duty, which is popular b/c of the CONSOLES! I don’t get EA’s thinking. DICE made a great game and I think EA pushed the expectations too high.

Exactly. I’m sorry but if they want to kill CoD, they should have put a lot of focus on the console version, because that’s where the CoD players are. By making the console version a mere decent port, they blew that opportunity.

  11. Sorry I havent replied to this! Ive been too busy actually lovin the heck out of BF3. Its too terribly amusing. Frustrating at times, but its difference from COD makes it very amusing.

    Im on xBox – Rapier4

Im also on Battlelog, if we want to start a platoon there for the Sushi crowd.

My first view of the game was hatred. Nothing was working right and we couldnt join games. That ended as time went on in the evening. By day 2 of playing it, I found it horribly amusing. SOme of the comments mentioned above though are true. the BF series, IMO, is more for strategists and team players. Guys who dont go all rambo like COD players WANT to do. Its obvious whos a noob and who plays COD, they cant play as a team at all and pretty much do nothing of use. I can see it being VERY frustrating.
The talk about killing COD is also over. It wont. I also agree, why would they make the major port to the PC when trying to dethrone a major console title? Still think the game is good and fun, just not going to dethrone anyone.
