Good things come in three’s. Or is that celebrity deaths? Who knows, but what we do know is that November is full of threequels, lots and lots of them. A threequel, in case this is your first day alive, is the 3rd installment of a franchise. This month alone we are treated to Uncharted 3, Saint’s Row: The Third, Modern Warfare 3, Assassin’s Creed 2: Revelations (the third game in the Assassin’s Creed 2 trilogy and yes, it counts) and already in September and October we had Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3 and Resistance 3. Whew!
Our friends at Wired’s game blog GameLife have pulled together a list of the best threequels in gaming history. There are some great games on here, including some that you may not have heard of or may not have thought were “Part 3’s” in their respective series. I look forward to finally trying Metal Gear Solid 3 when I get the Metal Gear Solid HD collection for Xmas. Take a look at the list and tell us what they left off! 1, 2, 3, GO!

I know its not out yet, but I’m calling it now. Mass Effect 3 will be at the top of my list of threequels. I also can’t wait to try Snake Eater when it comes out too.
I’d have to say Fallout 3, without a doubt. I’m also going to say Half-Life 2: Episode 3/ Half-Life 3 in advance, I already know I’ll love it when it finally comes out.
My favorite threequel was Final Fantasy III – until I found out it was actually a sixquel. Damn you, Squaresoft! Since I’m still holding a torch for the old adventure games, I’d have to say The Curse of Monkey Island belongs on this list. Definitely a classic threequel and probably the hardest a game has ever made me laugh.
GTA III.
Hoping Uncharted 3 is, but only 5 minutes into the game.
@supernovaforce: Yep, I’m right there with ya on Mass Effect 3. I’m gonna count my chickens because I have a feeling ME3 is going to be at least as good as ME2, which is a very good thing.
@DirefulGnone: Fallout 3, definitely, was an excellent open-world game. Seriously, I’ve said it several times before but still, it ruined my Xbox 360 social life. Plus, FO3 was faithful and engrossing as it captured the Fallout atmosphere and universe.
Deus Ex Human Revolution (you know I had to) lived up to the high-quality game design of DX1 and was a stand-out game compared to contemporary FPSRPGs. Plus, while DX1 had the luxury of playing the Matrix Conspiracy tone straight because it was still pretty new, DX3 went above and beyond by creating a fresh, original, immersive, golden world.
I have fond memories of Syphon Filter 3 all the way back on the PS1. It’s since been eclipsed by Dark Mirror, or Logan’s Shadow, but having replayed 3 recently it’s still an absolute blast.
SSX3 is my fave in its series (here’s hoping the new one retains some of that old magic).
Hmmm, other threequels… Deus Ex: Human Revolution, MGS3 and BF3 (what little I’ve played on my friend’s PC) are all really fantastic. I’m really hoping Uncharted 3 is kick-ass like 2. I really want that series to go from strength to strength!
MGS 3 is the only of the series I haven’t played, and I keep hearing how great it is. I started probably 5 or 6 times, got frustrated early on, and stopped playing.
As for my personal 3s, I’d agree with benign on FFIII, even if turned out to be VI. I played it as III, and it’s probably my favorite 3. Also, Morrowind (Elder Scrolls 3), a game that bewildered me my first five or six times playing it, then made so much sense when I finally learned it. Probably one of the most rewarding games I’ve ever played.
And yes, I am looking forward to Mass Effect 3 as much as everyone else, but even more so The Last Guardian…whenever that comes out.
