Dropping the Difficulty

Halo

I’m hardcore. At least, I consider myself to be. As such, I usually play games the first time through on at least normal, never dropping to easy mode unless I am just interested in the story, which is a rare occasion at best. But with games that I’ve played before, such as the newly released Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition, I wanted to challenge myself and play it on Heroic. So that’s what Eddy and I did.

Until some technical SNAFUs got in the way. We were playing co-op, breezing through the game and right at the very end of the level “Assault on the Control Room” when we were suddenly disconnected from Xbox Live. Thanks to the games archaic checkpoint system, we lost our progress and would have been forced to replay the whole level again, if it wasn’t for the fact that we rage quit for a week.

Finally, this weekend, we got back on the Halo horse and started kicking ass again. Until it happened again…in The Library. Rather than race to trade the game in, which was my first instinct, Eddy suggested we drop it to normal and just beat it quickly. And so we did. And what an enjoyable experience that was. We were so tired of the game that we just wanted to race right through it and be done with it.

Has this happened to anyone else? You suddenly lose all concern for your hardcore cred and just want to BEAT THE FREAKING THING and move on with your life? Sound off!

  1. If there’s a trophy/cheev for playing on the hardest difficulty I always start out on it but very rarely last until the end.

I had a week off in which to play the God of War Trilogy, all the games blur together in my mind but I remember playing the majority of them in Easy thanks to the “You died too many times” game over screen.

It’s even worse on PC because there readily available trainers for 99% of games that can give you anything from god mode to unlimited money. I ended up using one in Metro 2033 because I loved the story and atmosphere but found the actual gun-play to be a bit off and I hated the stealth sections.

  2. The only difficulty cheevo I ever willingly gave up on was the Dead Space 2 one where I only got three saves. I messed up on my save placement and I was too far to start over. I really wanted that giant finger gun.

I beat Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Super Gaiden Turbo on Legendary with a friend on local co-op. Needless to say, there were no disconnects, but there were some parts (mostly the Library and Two Betrayals) that were pretty tough.

As an aside, how memorable are Halo’s levels? I bet if I asked someone to name something from 2 or 3 or Reach they’d say “the Arbiter level with the gas mine” or “the one on Earth with the gun” or “the space level”. Most people I talk to can name CE’s levels without trouble.

  3. I’ll be honest, when I went on this one quest at level 24 in skyrim and after a couple of hours of being one shot by a room of Draugr Deathlords… I might of switched difficulty levels. Just maybe.

  4. Call of Duty. Cant do it anymore, I just want to beat the game. Im used to being good-moderatly good in multiplayer, so Im used to getting pwned at times. But the amount of frustration the single player can give is NUTS. Since COD MW2 Ive usually toned it down to normal, Veteran was just too extreme. It made it less fun when all I wanted was the story. (On a side note the enemies precision in single player was used in Black Op’s training mode for online. That stuff was pretty tough. Enemies are almost instantaneously accurate.)

I also ALMOST did it on Ace Combat 6. Almost….I couldnt get past one part. Came through in the end.
