After a couple of years of silence, Bungie has spilled the beans on their ambitious, imaginative project, Destiny. In one of their famous ViDocs, the house that built Halo unveiled its new shared-world shooter. While it’s hard to know what it is exactly at this point, the implication seems to be a persistent online sandbox world, where the players have an affect on the world and the story. It sounds like an MMO, but also with a few elements such as DayZ.
Bungie plans to unfold this universe over the course of 10 years. And what a universe to play in. I could go on and on about the art style, which reminds me of both Halo and Mass Effect, but with a touch of ruin seen from something like Enslaved. While most of what we see in the video is concept art, we do get a couple of bits of gameplay towards the end. You should really just watch it for yourself.
What do you guys think of Destiny, upon its first reveal? I have to admit, it’s a bit bittersweet to see the game’s scope and style, knowing that I had a chance to be at Bungie for all of this. I’m curious to see what else they have in store for us, and what other things they’ll release about the game in the coming months.
I’m so pumped for this, I’ve missed Bungie the last two years and I’m glad to see them trying to reinvent the wheel again. My body is ready.
It’s a testament to how awesome this looks and sounds that I want to know so much more about it all.
Bungie have always been amazing at bringing new tech and idea’s to the console market, particularly their matchmaking and I expect Destiny to be no different. I am very excited not only for the game but for what their technology can be used for in other games.
Although saying that I do think it’s a bit cheeky that they are asking for preoders when they haven’t set a release date or even shown us anything but a few snippets of gameplay but that’s more of a personal problem.
I know a lot of people here are big Halo fans but I wish Bungie would have at least tried to get away from the whole space thing for a little bit. What kills it for me though is this quote from a Eurogamer article:
“Everything you do in life is more fun if you do it with your friends, everything you do in life is more fun if there are other people around doing the same thing with you.” – Jason Jones
I’m sick of devs thinking like this, yes some people only enjoy games when they are playing with friends but there are plenty of people like myself who just want to sit down and engross themselves in a game. I don’t care how you play there is simply no way to involve yourself in a rich story or world if you have strangers or even friends running all over the place chatting away. I wouldn’t have a problem if they just wanted to make a multiplayer game and said so but I hate that they try to justify a weak singleplayer experience with that reasoning.
One final minor complaint I have is they spent far too much of that video talking about how awesome they are and how great the game is going to be with little proof as to why. There is no doubt that with their reputation and the hype already being built for Destiny they have a lot to live up to at this point.
Still, just because it’s not my cup of tea doesn’t mean others won’t enjoy it. Not trying to rain on anyone’s parade here just asking people to try and stay grounded until we at least get to some gameplay.
Bungie sure has a nice office.
