GamerSushi Asks: What Are You Playing Heart of the Cards Edition

hearthstone

It’s been a while since we’ve checked in with you, Sushians, to ask the age old question: what are you playing? We’re in-between bouts of big releases right now, so it’s a good time to take stock and see how your 2014 is shaping up.

Personally I’ve been playing plenty of Hearthstone: Heroes of WarCraft, Blizzard’s new online collectible card game (or CCG for the purpose of brevity). This is the first CCG I’ve gotten into in earnest and I’m starting to realize just how freaking bad I am at them. I’ve won one Ranked match in Hearthstone and other players regularly take me apart. I’m still learning the ropes though, so I’m confident I’ll at least get one other win soon.

Other than that I tried out a couple conversion mods for Sins of a Solar Empire. There’s the always classic Star Wars mod Sins of a Galactic Empire but I also tried out Dawn of the Reapers, a Mass Effect-themed one. Dawn of the Reapers is in very early alpha but the Reaper models are in there as well as most of the Council/Cerberus ships. I’m definitely looking forward to the end product on that one.

So what are you guys playing?

  1. With the intensity of school as of late, Hearthstone has been my go-to when I have moments of downtime. That game hasn’t gotten old for me, and once you start to learn the strategies of it and get more familiar with all of the cards, a whole new level of enjoyment is uncovered. I even purchase the occasional card pack *gasp*.

  2. I honestly have no clue what this Hearthstone business is, but everyone’s talking about it.

I’ve been in the midst of some personal nuttiness, hence my lack of posting on the site for a few weeks (thanks to Mitch for holding down the fort), so I haven’t been playing much of anything at all, really. I still can’t log in to Titanfall which personally very frustrating. HOWEVER, I did get a free evening last week to play Wolf Among Us episode 3, and hot dang is that game shaping up into something special. I really love the vibe, the atmosphere, and the way the choices are framed. It’s hard to believe that Telltale could get any better at their own formula, but I feel like they’re just ratcheting it up with every release right now. They’re easily doing my favorite work in the industry.

  3. I’ve got the Hearthstone installer on my desktop, and I spend hours at a time staring at it. I know that if I install it, my social life will probably be dead.

Apart from that I’ve been all over the place. Ground Zeroes on the PS4 looks gorgeous, Payday 2 is super difficult, Dota 2 takes up too much time already, Goat Simulator is fun in 10 minute doses, Dark Souls 2 is my least favourite of the series, and finally I’ve been redoing the Dragon Age series on PC so im ready for the next one.

Also tried doing the same thing with The Witcher, got through the first couple of acts but I haven’t seemed to get back into it yet :\ Hopefully I do before the 3rd one comes out soon.

  4. One thing that I didn’t mention is that Hearthstone runs kind of rough on an iPad 2. The old trick of closing every other app helps but it’s still kind of ragged at points.

I am behind on Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead season 2 so I feel appropriately ashamed. I did go 50 – 18 in a round of Domination on BF4, though, so I got that going for me.

  5. Me and my housemate have been playing some of the Mega Drive/Genesis games on Steam but primarily Streets of Rage. I have also been playing Hydrophobia: Prophecy which isn’t very long but been having fun with that.

  6. Playing some Hearthstone (which is easier to play at home than League of Legends due to lack of latency issues) and Dark Souls 2.
I am REALLY bad at Hearthstone. Against the AI, there’s no problem and it’s still fun. Real people though? How do they pull off some of those clutch, Yu-Gi-Oh-esque comebacks? Oh you have 1 health compared to my 30? Prepare to die! Oh you drew THAT ONE CARD? Now all my minions died and all my health is gone?… 🙁

  7. @Petyr that happened to me a couple nights ago against a Paladin deck. I had him on the ropes but then he healed completely and wiped me out within a couple of hands. Feels bad, man.

Fortunately there’s the upcoming Naxxramas single-player campaign so scrubs like us can have some fun and not get completely whupped.

  8. @Mitch
That sounds brilliant. Good to see us scrubs are cared for!
On a happier note, I finally got a win in Arena last night! Sadly it was due to a DC! 🙁
I just need to learn more about the cards and how to properly structure a deck. Arena’s loads of fun, but I am way too prone to picking cards with no synergy. If I have loads of things with charge, I’m happy.
