It feels like one of the collective wishes of the Internet has been granted today as Ubisoft announced, hot on the heels of the release of the refreshingly good Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and ahead of the motion picture adaptation, that Assassin’s Creed will not have a new game in 2016.
In a blog post titled “A Message from the Assassin’s Creed team“, Ubisoft talks about how after the release of 2014’s less than critically acclaimed Unity the team wanted to step back from their schedule and reexamine the development pipeline for the series.
To slip into editorial mode here, a year off is a good thing for the series. Ever since Assassin’s Creed 3, there seems to be this yearly swell of anticipation that this one could be the game to kill the franchise. Somehow Ubisoft managed to stave that off and recovered from what could have been a killing blow with Unity.
Ubisoft also has a pretty full 2016 already, with the Division poised to make big waves less than a month, and the previously announced Ghost Recon: Wildlands and For Honor lurking on the horizon (Watch Dogs 2 is most likely on the cards as well).
There are rumors abound already about the next Assassin’s Creed game, but I’m content to wait until Ubisoft has an official announcement for us. What do you guys think about this development? Is a year off for Assassin’s Creed a good thing?

But yeah, this can only be a good thing. Let us miss it a little. Go into the lab, get some ideas and come back strong.
