Review: Left 4 Dead

left4deadIf anybody knows anything about anything, they know that zombies are the glue that hold this world together. Or at least, that’s my view. Throw zombies at any crappy old movie/videogame/book and it instantly becomes a winner. Really, I’d be happy if everything had the undead rolling like waves in the sea, overtaking the helpless innocents.

So you can imagine my excitement about Left 4 Dead. Not only because it is chock full of zed heads, but also because it is the spawn of legendary developer Valve, those messiah figures turned game makers (if you can’t tell, I kind of like them). When you break it down, it’s been hard to argue with their track record over the last few years.

The Metal Gear Solid Cast Improv Therapy

Sounds just as confusing as the plot of MGS4, no? Basically, there is a new video out that features the voice actors of the MGS games (Raiden, Snake, Roy Campbell, Naomi Hunter and Otacon) all doing an improv session. The idea behind the skit is that they can’t separate the game characters from their actual lives.

It’s completely made up on the spot (improv, duh), and is sometimes bizarre and somteimes hilarious. My favorite bits are when David Hayter busts out the Snake voice, and when they jump in with the “Snaaaaaake” bits. Some good stuff, give it a watch.

Boomer In A Thong Makes Left 4 Dead Sexy

boomer-thongBeing out of the PC gaming scene for awhile now (not by choice, it’s just that updating rigs is expensive), I sometimes miss out on one of the coolest aspects of it- community content. The mods, the skins, the updates, it’s all totally worth it to buy a game because over the course of a couple of years, you get what you paid for from what people add on.

It seems this is already the case with Left 4 Dead, as there are already mods and such for the zombie shoot-em-up. This one, however, just about made me pee my pants in laughter. The boomer in a thong. That’s right. He’s big. He’s burpy. He’s thongy. And he’s sexy as hell.

You should definitely check out the screenshots for a good laugh. Heck, download it yourself and get in on the sexy action. Anybody else seen some good L4D mods/skins?

Today’s WTF: Lady Puts Credit Card in Wii

credit-card-wiiWow, starting the new year off with a bang, eh kids? Already we’ve got a pretty epic fail/wtf-inducing moment to talk about. And this one just takes many a cake.

Apparently, a poster over at NeoGAF has informed the gaming community this his neighbor broke her Wii by putting a credit card in it. The defense? She was trying to buy VC games and she took “put in your credit card” a bit too literally. Now her Wii is broken.

Funny thing is, there are just as many games to play on it… Ok, I kid. I bash on the Wii too much, but let’s transfer that negative energy into making fun of this silly lady. How’s that for an epic fail? View some pics of the ordeal here.

Happy New Year!

newyearWell, a new year is coming upon us, and let’s hope that 2009 is just as good for gaming as 2008 was. To be honest, while there were a lot of great games that have dropped on us in the past few months, I don’t know if there were any standout titles that left me proclaiming “greatest game evar!!”, though there were quite a few that I did love.

Anthony and I wanted to say thanks for hanging out around here and reading our goofy thoughts on video games, as well as sharing your own back with us. I have to be honest, I check this site more than SFF, which I know is how many of you found this cool gaming nook. I think we’ve got a sweet community here, and I’m a huge fan of the discussions we get going.

Kid Gets a Wii, Needs a Slap

Just a warning: watch this at your own risk. You thought the music in that WoW video was bad? Wait til you get a load of this ADHD freak’s screaming about his new Nintendo Wii. I’m not trying to be a grinch, I mean it’s cool that he’s excited. But still.

Major props to Nintendo for keeping the excitement for this going 2 years later. Seriously, I thought it would fade by last Christmas, but I was dead, dead wrong.

PC Gaming Preview, 2009

pc-gamingI know that many of you are PC gamers, so I wanted to direct your attention over to Shacknews, where they have put together some cool lists for 2009. Basically, each one runs down a huge list of titles that are going to be hitting the PC next year, and apparently there’s a lot to look forward to.

So far, there’s not really a whole lot on my plate that excites me about 2009 in terms of the consoles I own, but looking at these lists shows that PC gaming is far from dead. Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead DLC, Starcraft II, Dragon Age: Origins, Battlefield Heroes, and not to mention the other ports from consoles. Good stuff.

Be sure to check out both part one as well as part two to get your PC gaming info. What are you guys excited about for next year?

The Star Wars Battlefront III That Could Have Been

battlefrontI loved me some Star Wars: Battlefront II. Seriously. I played the junk out of that game online with some friends of mine. We would often just square off against an army of bots, playing as heroes, grunts and whatever else held our fancy to enjoy us some killing, Star Wars style. I think it’s one of my favorite games of last gen, and have been dying for a sequel.

Well, apparently, Free Radical was working on one. I say was with such emphasis because Free Radical just closed up shop in the last couple of weeks. The game has now passed on to Rebellion, so it’s still making its rounds, but recently some SW Battlefront III screenshots have made their way to the intertubes of some of the models being worked on. Granted, these are Free Radical’s designs and are from a year or so ago, but I find it pretty interesting.

Check them out, as some of them are rather fancy. Did any of you guys play Star Wars Battlefront at all? Thoughts?

Games to Get Cheaper?

moneyWith the more expensive tech and the big budgets behind gaming in this day and age, it becomes natural for the prices to rise. However, I’ve always wished that companies would scale the costs of their titles in order for the prices to stay down. It’s not worth buying a short game like Mirror’s Edge for $60 in today’s economy.

However, it seems like the recession is going to be giving pause to video game companies. Forbes points out that already, prices of games are starting to come down, most notable Call of Duty: World at War, which was reduced to $49 just before Christmas, and was one of the holidays’ top sellers at that. So now, analysts are predicting more might drop as well.

I find this to be great news. To me, instead of just maxing out your dollars so you can make a $60 price point, game developers should set good budgets for what a game needs, and then price accordingly. As I mentioned earlier, a 5-6 hour game should not cost me $60. Hopefully this continues. What do you guys think?

The Craft of War: BLIND

So I’m rather impressed after watching this new WoW video. While this isn’t quite machinima (I’m guessing it’s all animated in a program like 3D Max), it’s still the best World of Warcraft video I’ve seen hands down. The animations are gorgeous, and it’s just entertaining to watch. While the music can and does get old, the fight scenes are pretty wicked.

Titled, “The Craft of War: BLIND”. Good stuff.

Left 4 Dead DLC Soon?

left4deadLeft 4 Dead, how I miss thee. I’m in Tampa right now and it’s been almost a week since I’ve been able to slaughter hordes of the undead with my all-powerful assault rifle or pump-action shotgun. Soon though. Soon I’ll return to ridding the earth of these vile minions. And who knows, maybe something new will be waiting for me.

According to Valve writer Chet Faliszek (dude bra), some DLC is coming out for L4D pretty soon. Nothing too definite, but it does sound like it might contain some new “scenarios”, which I take to mean new campaigns. Which is kind of awesome. The SDK for the PC should be out at some point as well.

Unfortunately for those of us silly enough to own this game on the 360, the DLC is going to cost some money, while PC users get it for free. I think it’s totally ridiculous that MS insists on charging for ALL DLC that they release, even if the PC counterparts get them for free. It makes no sense at all to me, especially since I pay a subscription to XBL already.

So, who’s excited about more L4D?

Review: Fable II

f2A few years ago, a new RPG from Lionhead Studios promised great adventures for XBox players. The premise was simple: create a character in the world of Albion, and tackle your quest however you wished. Want to kill villagers? Sure! Want to be a goody-too shoes? Go for it! While the game ultimately promised more than it actually delivered, many consider it to be a staple of the old XBox.

Fable II has now returned players to the realm of Albion, with promises renewed of an open world and a sprawling, epic tale. I eagerly picked the game up a few weeks ago, and started in right away. As some of you know, I’m a complete tool for open world games, so the prospect of diving into a new fantasy world that wasn’t Ivalice or something from Star Wars was very enticing.

So how did it hold up?

Kojima Working on Two New Games

kojimaHideo Kojima, I love you. You are like that strange friend who everyone knows is on drugs but we keep you around because you are a great time and do mean karaoke. Also, you make some cool video games. Or you’ve made a few in your time, that is.

Word on the street is that Kojima is now working on not one, but two new titles, including a rumored FPS. It seems that he’s been visiting some Western gamemakers like Infinity Ward to study up on the genre.

50 bucks says that one of them is Metal Gear related, even though Kojima has sworn off the franchise for each of the last two sequels.

Halo 3 Mythbusters

I’m sure many of you already know about this series, but I’ve been digging Halo 3 Mythbusters on YouTube for the past few days. In case you’re unaware, it’s a series where myths about Halo 3 matchmaking are either confirmed or busted through a series of tests, just like the show on Discovery.

It’s a pretty fun time, I guess since I’ve been getting back into Halo 3 this week. I know a few weeks ago I made a comment about people having mental deficiencies, but let’s just put that behind us.

Metacritic’s Top 10 Games

metacriticOnce again, we revisit that timeless truth. We love the junk out of top 10 lists. Well, it seems that MTV Multiplayer has done some homework and put together this nifty list of the 10 best rated games of the year on Metacritic.

While we can’t shout “wtf what a sucky list” at this, we can get an idea of games that were for some reason universally overrated/underrated. It begs the question of whether or not the gaming media gives free passes to some of the bigger franchises like GTA IV and MGS 4. In my opinion, both of these were lackluster entries into their respective series.

List is after the jump!

Christmas Loot!

treasureMerry Christmas to everyone, from GamerSushi. I hope you guys are all having a safe, fun holiday with lots of presents and time with family. Christmas is maybe my favorite holiday, there’s just a lot of nostalgia and awesome stuff wrapped up all in one day.

That being said, it’s also a time for sweet presents and cool gear. So, tell us about that loot. What did you get? It doesn’t have to be gaming related, just post what you got for Christmas!

So far, I’ve gotten some gift cards, Iron Man on Blu Ray ( I think) and Beedle the Bard by J. K. Rowling. I haven’t made all the rounds yet, but I’ll post more later.

Post your loot!

Left 4 Dead: Death From Above

Left 4 Dead has sucked away much of my waking life over the last few weeks. The versus mode is intense, addictive and most of all, incredibly fun. While I suck at the hunter, I know that there are quite a few people out there that have mastered the impeccable timing required for the dreaded wall jump of death. This video highlights a dude with what some might call mad skillz.

WoW Could Be The World’s 4th Largest City

wow1It seems that WoW has now surpassed the 11.5 million subscriber mark this month, after decimating the 11 million mark just a short while ago. I guess those Wrath of the Lich King sales really pushed them over the edge. Who knew?

Seriously, though, that’s an absurd amount of subscribers. Stacked up against the biggest cities of the world, that places WoW just above Delhi, India which has 11.3 million people in the city proper. Just a couple more million to pass Mumbai (13.6 million), and that will be something quite unprecedented in gaming.

It’s hard to imagine that many people all playing the same game all the time. I’m really just baffled by that number. So how many of you here have played or are currently WoW players? You are a mighty army, I’m told. I’d rather not cross you.
