Make Way for the New DS

While lots of rumors and speculations have been swirling about a looming announcement from Nintendo, it seems that someone has finally broken a story. MCV is reporting that tomorrow morning, Nintendo is going to be announcing a brand new and upgraded model of the Nintendo DS.

Apparently, this DS is going to be designed to compete with the PSP, which is kind of rocking the DS in terms of sales recently. While nobody knows all of the additional features, it seems that it’s going to feature both an MP3 player as well as a camera of some kind. Looking forward to seeing more about this tomorrow. Who else is excited about the new DS?

Ding Dong, He Got Disbarred

Gamers everywhere are no doubt rejoicing after this bombshell dropped today: after months of wild proceedings and all kinds of events leading up to this, it appears that Jack Thompson, anti-games lawyer, has been disbarred in the state of Florida.

While many see this as cause for celebration, I doubt it means that our friend is going anywhere. I’m sure he will find ways to express his viewpoints loudly, appear on media outlets that will let him speak about “murder simulators”, write books, who knows?

Creating an XBox Mii, Er, Avatar

Apparently my XBot is showing today, as I bring even more news from the MS front. Once again, Gamerscore Blog has updated this week with some new info about the features of the upcoming new XBox Experience, an update to the 360’s dashboard.

This week covers the creation of Avatars for you to use as part of your Gamertag, and I have to say that I like some of the options. While there are lots complaining about them being glorified Miis, that is 100 percent correct. However, Nintendo hates all things related to the Internet, so the Miis just live in loneliness on your Wii. Here, they go out into the wild and flourish.

Rumor: Mass Effect Movie?

As we all know, the world of video game movies has been a tough one for studio execs to crack. Nearly every movie based on a video game has been wretched, and it just doesn’t seem to show any signs of letting up.

However, it seems that Avi Arad, one of the bigwigs responsible for Marvel’s recent comeback, has optioned the rights from EA to produce a movie based on the RPG Mass Effect. Pretty wild.

More Diablo III Crazies

We all know that the Internet is full of crazies. Loonies. Nutsos. Especially when it comes to tampering with their favorite hobbies, namely gaming. When that game happens to be Diablo III, it seems that people move from regular crazy into the territory of slobbering fanboy crazy, which is a different kind of crazy altogether.

After all of the months of moaning about the brighter more colorful approach to the world of Diablo, Blizzard says that fans will have more reasons to hate them in the near future, when they release the next class of character that can be found in the game.

GTA IV DLC This Fall (360 Only…DOH!)

Videogamer.com is reporting that Microsoft has indeed confirmed that downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV will be out this fall.

What exactly this entails is anyone’s guess, but as a PS3 owner, I hope it’s nothing storyline related. But there is hope yet…

No Place Like Home

For those of you PS3 owners who, like me, are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Home, it seems like it’s finally getting closer after all these months. In case you’ve forgotten about what this new online lobby/world is going to feature, there is a new video out that fills you in on all of the goodies. Definitely worth a watch.

Personally, I think this could be just what the PS3 needs to give Sony’s console that shot in the arm that the dashboard functionality gives to the 360. Thoughts?

Snake? Snake? SSSNNNAAAKKKEE!!!

Metal Gear Solid Creator Hideo Kojima is speaking out against game marketing that is all hype and no substance. His strong comments raised eyebrows across the gaming industry with a posting on the job announcements page for Kojima Productions: Continue reading Snake? Snake? SSSNNNAAAKKKEE!!!

Waiting for Big Daddy

No, not your pimp. The Big Daddy from Bioshock, which is coming to the PS3 soon, after having been on the XBox 360 for a year. However, while the 360 version fits on a regular old honest-to-goodness DVD, the PS3 version will come on a Blu Ray disc, and will feature a 5 GB install. Yeah, 5 gigs.

The install is unfortunately mandatory and amounts to about 10-15 minutes of installation.

Luke be a Joker Tonight

It’s a shame that there hasn’t been a truly great Batman game in a while. But wait! Apparently, someone is going to try their hand with the new game Batman: Arkham Asylum. Overjoyed? Maybe not, but it gets better…

In news that can only be described as totally kick-ass, Mark Hamill is going to be reprising his vocal role as the Joker for the game. If you’re not sure what this means, it’s actually totally awesome.

Skeletons in Gaming’s Closet

Everyone knows that gaming hasn’t always had its high points, particularly when it seems that a larger part of the media wants to smear our favorite hobby whenever they get a chance. What, with things like Mass Effect on Fox News, GTA always being over-scrutinized, etc, it seems that gaming’s got a lot of scandals to sweep under the rug.

To categorize all of these unmentionable moments (some silly, others not so silly), MCV has put together a list of Gaming’s Biggest Controversies. They cover a wide variety of topics from America’s Army to Hot Coffee.

Coming Soon: Guitars Gently Weeping

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are the latest craze with everyone these days. This is a game that I would call a casual game, no question. And big rumblings coming courtesy of EGM’s gossip monger Quartermann: Continue reading Coming Soon: Guitars Gently Weeping

Spore, EA and Castration

In a move that can only be described as completely moronic (or evil, depending on your view, really), EA has essentially crippled Spore with a horrendous DRM. It is basically rewarding its customers the way a totalitarian regime might reward people who steal food: Chopping dicks.

Why EA would do this on the heels of the whole Mass Effect PC clusterflub when that game was released on PC is completely beyond me, and many other consumers for that matter.
